The University of Pennsylvania was founded by Benjamin Franklin when he had a little down time between establishing a country and experimenting with lightning. Since opening its doors to students in 1751, the Ivy League university has accumulated a notable list of accomplishments, including the creation of one of the first medical schools in the US. Massachusetts General Hospital (Mass General) is hardly general. The 200-year-old acute care hospital is Harvard Medical School's original and largest teaching hospital. With some 900 beds, Mass General has its main campus in Boston and operates several health centers in surrounding communities. Its specialized medical departments include cancer, cardiology and heart surgery, neurology and neurosurgery, and diabetes and endocrinology. As a leading research facility, Mass General hosts a gaggle of clinical trials and has an annual research budget approaching $700 million. The hospital is a founding member of the Partners HealthCare System (along with Brigham and Women's).
