      Application

      I interviewed at AlphaSense

      Interview

Overall was a structured process but seemed to lack any honest purpose. 3 rounds. One call with HR, then 2 calls with Team member and Hiring Manager respectively. These initial stages were okay and the people were great. Next stage was a case study and presentation with leadership. During this phase it was evident I wasted my time with the case study I prepared for a few days, didn’t get any interest or questions about it and just got nods. What proceeded were random off-topic questions with interviewers that seemed for the most part disinterested and nonchalant , almost like their mind was already made up. Felt like a waste of my time.

Typical background related questions initially and personality style. Next few stages were just random scenario based.

      Application

I applied online. The process took 1 week. I interviewed at AlphaSense (New York, NY) in May 2025

      Interview

A company recruiter reached out to me soon after I applied to the role, and we scheduled a call. The recruiter was very pleasant to chat with, and gave me an overview of the interview process (4 rounds total, including a video call with a team member to discuss a product demo/culture fit, separate call with the hiring manager and a case study to complete), as well as a specific timeline when they're looking for new hires to start. I was also sent a product demo to watch prior to my calls. Right after I got off the call with the recruiter, I was immediately sent an email to schedule the next chats, along with the product demo, so the speed with which the interview process was proceeding seemed promising. The team member I spoke with next seemed very smart and knowledgeable, and the questions he asked were straightforward - we discussed my background and the product demo, along with potential career paths in the company and overall culture. However, my experience with the hiring manager was the exact opposite. She only asked one behavioral question, shared just one KPI by which success in the role would be measured (number of client calls you hop on) and gave very generic responses to standard questions I asked. From the beginning of the call, I felt like her mind was already made up (most likely, there was a preferred candidate selected before our interview). Although both the team member and hiring manager come from nontraditional backgrounds, they did ask about investment/private equity industry experience (which neither of them have, and which was not a requirement in the job description) while emphasizing it's OK if I don't have it, leading me to believe they didn't know what they really wanted for this role. I later got a canned rejection from the recruiter without any feedback. (Worth noting the role itself is just doing product demos with clients pre- and post-sale.)

      Application

I applied through an employee referral. The process took 2 weeks. I interviewed at AlphaSense in Mar 2025

      Interview

I applied for the role through a strong referral from another person in the same role. She was very kind and direct - which I appreciate. Part 1: Recruiter round - Standards screening questions - She was brilliant, specific and professional Part 2: with Team member (a nightmare) and Manager — Hiring Manager : was very specific, offered context to unstructured questions and most importantly was polite and respectful. — Team member round was the complete opposite, I have NEVER in 4 years of my career, been in a place where I felt this uncomfortable. A. His questions were in a structured format and he thankfully managed to read them B. Throughout the interview, he was constantly touching his face (his jawline to be specific), was leaning onto the camera and fixing his hair. - Did not take ANY notes or - had the decency to stop making me uncomfortable while I was speaking (it was sooooo evident on my face) - If I dint need the job, I would have called him out, called following interview and reported him to the recruiter. - He asked me the Private Equity question (below).. I gave him the exact answer. His response was “how do YOU know that” and I swear he rolled his eyes. I mean why the heck would you even say that to a person who’s going to work with those specific clients (plus personally I found it to be more racist than anything). I wanted to react and call him out but unlike him I’m a professional so I politely replied “PE is part of core finance and since I studied Finance, I have the domain knowledge.” - The only time he looked in the camera was when I asked him about his role. In that to he was sooooo generic - I mean I gathered those insights while reading the JD. I don’t understand why the start-ups don’t give their employees training on conducting interviews and decency. I wouldn’t want to let my bias for him come in the way but after the interview I read all the comments here and realised most people have had a similar experience so I don’t think the company cares!
