All nodes are connected to a central switch. Each node has a dedicated, point-to-point connection to the switch. The star network topology is by far the most widely implemented topology in use today. One end node failure doesn't effect the other nodes. You would have different VLANs on the switch and servers will be added per their functionality (WWW, APP, DB etc..). I hope this helps.
