First estimate the number of daily flights worldwide. There are 190 countries in the world. Let's consider only 100 of them, the ones with the most important air traffic. Let's assume there are 50 airports per country and on average 20 flights per day per airport. That gives 100,000 flights worldwide per day. Let's assume an average duration of 3 hours per flight. Hence we have on average 12,500 flights flying now. A 90% interval could [3,000 ; 50,000].

For reference, there are ~100,000 flights/day worldwide serving ~50,000 routes. Could also think about how many airplanes do Boeing and Airbus sell each year (~1,000 total), how long they last (20-30 years), and what is their market share (maybe 10% if you include all small/personal planes). An additional layer of complexity is introduced if they're asking how many planes are actually in the air (not touching the ground) right now...
