How would you handle a difficult/disruptive class participant?

I shared a story about a past situation where a learner was asked to take the course, and it felt like a punishment/disciplinary action, although it was not set up that way. I handled it by taking them aside and asking them to make the best of it, as the company was still willing to invest in their growth and had not dismissed them. They had a choice, if they wanted to stay, this was a necessary step in that process. We ended up having an active participant, who enjoyed the class and learned new skills.
