      Intermediate Software Engineer Interview

      Sep 29, 2014
      Anonymous employee
      Accepted offer
      Positive experience
      Easy interview

      Application

I applied through a recruiter. The process took 2 weeks. I interviewed at UPMC

      Interview

Phone interview with recruiter. A few days later the recruiter called to ask whether I would be interested in an interview. I scheduled the interview with a secretary from the TDC. The interview was set up for the following week. It took place in a small room next to the waiting area. The itinerary was: Interview I: 2 tech leads & 1 manager (30 - 45 minutes) Interview II: 2 tech leads (30 - 45 minutes) Interview I: asked a bunch of questions about my resume, accomplishments, goals, reason why I wanted to leave my current job. For the technical portion I was asked a lot of OOP questions, how to implement very basic things (not even as tough as reversing a string), and then I was asked a bunch of language-specific questions. Interview II: asked a bunch of questions about my resume, accomplishments, goals, reason why I wanted to leave my current job. For the technical portion I was asked a lot of fundamental database questions and some specific questions about certain database systems (this may not apply to you. Our conversation naturally led down this path based on my previous experience). I thought the first interview went well. One of the interviewers in the second interview was surly. So I wasn't certain how that would add up. The recruiter called me the following day to make an initial offer.

      Interview questions [1]

      Question 1

Nothing unexpected. The most difficult part was explaining more complex parts of projects from my resume. Definitely spend time making sure your resume makes sense. You can search "tech interview" questions and basically any site will give you the answers needed for the tech questions.

I applied online. I interviewed at UPMC in Oct 2014

      Interview

phone interview includes mostly language specific questions just simple ask and simple answer(for me, they ask a lot of questions about java) Onsite interview includes one OO design problem: one switcher(control light), one light, one sensor, person, design a system that meet the requirement: once one person is in the room, the light is on, once no one in the room, the light is off. one algorithm problem: string anagram question: a list of words, group words which has the same characters. They won't reimburse the transportation fee for you to come and back to the airport from your home. And they didn't provide dinner before interview day, and lunch during interview day. They only pay for the transportation fee for you to come to their office from the airport.
