stocks are equity investment in company stocks. mutual funds on the other hand are a joint of stocks, bonds, and money market investments (most commonly). mutual funds will be run by a portfolio manager which make the mutual fund itself act similar to an individual company. therefore mutual funds are usually less risky than stocks due to the diversity in investment it has.
