Obviously this isn't incredibly relevant to computer hardware but it was a very 'out of the blue' and interesting question. There are plenty of good reasons why a manhole cover should be round, for example: So they can't fall into the hole and hurt someone, and so they can be rolled to move them instead of having to pick one up and carry it.
