"Do you have any experience with e-commerce?" Was unexpected because job description didn't mention e-commerce. Turns out the position is very e-commerce heavy and that wasn't clear at all from the description or requirements. I think there was a problem with internal language that it was hard for someone outside to get a handle on: "digital" division meant all their online assets (which I figured out and was highly qualified for); "online catalog" meant e-commerce which I didn't figure out until the 2nd interview and was asked the above questions. It was also a much more highly product-management driven position than what I think of as "editorial", so I had pretty different expectations than what they were looking for. That being said, this is only a problem with the job posting, not with the people, who were great and did, finally, do a great job of getting me up to speed on what the position actually was. (and I wanted that position, darn it! ;-) I was turned down because there were others in the pool with better e-commerce experience.
The code challenge was hard because I wasn't expecting that to happen in the interview, so I was using their laptop, and dev environment. They were patient with me while I got use to the different environment, but I would have loved to be on my own machine.
