Security specialists are responsible for implementing and overseeing an organization’s security systems. They install, program, and maintain automated systems, including managing the distribution and coding of security passes or ID cards. Their role may also encompass IT security and involve duties related to keeping data and electronic records protected. They initiate and direct investigations into any security breaches, irregularities, or other issues of concern. They develop and document security policies and procedures.
Security specialists have at least a high school diploma, although additional education and training is preferred. They should have hands-on experience programming and maintaining electronic security systems and related components. They must be well-informed on all applicable laws and regulations. Familiarity with IT security practices and effective strategies for safeguarding electronic records is helpful.
