Overview
We are seeking a Cloud Infrastructure Engineer to operate, maintain, and continuously improve our AWS environment, with a focus on security, reliability, and performance. With an AWS footprint of roughly 30 EC2 instances and supporting services, this is a hands-on, generalist position well suited to someone who enjoys working across infrastructure, networking, security, and operations rather than specializing in a single area. Our core network runs in Azure, so Azure experience is a strong plus.
The ideal candidate has hands-on experience with core AWS services, Linux administration, and production infrastructure, and maintains systems that align with cloud best practices, PCI DSS compliance requirements, and reliable backup and disaster recovery. Only candidates residing in Chicago, Texas, Florida, Indiana, or Georgia will be considered.
Key Responsibilities
Cloud Infrastructure & Operations
- Build, maintain, and support secure and scalable AWS infrastructure using AWS best practices.
- Manage AWS networking, including VPCs, routing, security groups, and segmentation.
- Maintain network connectivity between AWS and our Azure-based core network.
- Support highly available systems across AWS services and availability zones.
- Support containerized workloads using ECS and Docker.
- Administer, secure, and troubleshoot Linux-based systems to maintain stability and performance.
- Assist with infrastructure automation and operational improvement
Disaster Recovery & Resiliency
- Implement and maintain disaster recovery strategies for critical systems and services.
- Support backup, replication, and recovery processes to meet business and compliance requirements.
- Participate in disaster recovery testing and failover exercises.
- Maintain documentation, runbooks, and recovery procedures for operational and audit readiness.
Security & Compliance
- Apply security best practices to the AWS infrastructure you manage, in support of the organization’s PCI DSS compliance and internal security standards.
- Configure infrastructure-level controls such as IAM, security groups, certificates, and secrets management, following established security guidance.
- Help remediate infrastructure-related findings surfaced by security tooling such as GuardDuty.
- Ensure infrastructure and platform logs are forwarded to centralized logging and SIEM platforms.
- Support the security and compliance teams during assessments and remediation efforts, including providing infrastructure evidence as needed.
Monitoring, Performance & Cost Management
- Implement and maintain monitoring and logging using CloudWatch.
- Ensure logs are retained and protected to meet operational, security, and compliance requirements.
- Use AWS Systems Manager for patching, secure server access, and configuration management.
- Troubleshoot AWS, Linux, security, and availability issues.
- Identify opportunities to improve cost efficiency while maintaining security, performance, and availability.
Data & Storage Services
- Work with DBAs to support RDS and Aurora, including backups, encryption, patching, recovery testing, and performance support.
- Administer S3 for secure object storage using proper access controls and lifecycle policies.
- Support EFS for shared file storage with attention to security, availability, and performance.
Collaboration
- Work closely with application, database, and security teams to support deployments and infrastructure improvements.
- Contribute to technical documentation and knowledge sharing across the team.
Required Qualifications
- 3+ years’ experience in infrastructure, cloud, or systems engineering.
- 2+ years’ hands-on experience supporting production workloads in AWS.
- Experience administering Linux systems, including troubleshooting, performance tuning, and security hardening.
- Experience supporting or implementing disaster recovery solutions in cloud environments.
- Strong cloud networking experience, including site-to-site VPN configuration.
- Familiarity with cloud security best practices as they apply to infrastructure.
- General awareness of compliance frameworks such as PCI DSS in cloud environments.
- Experience supporting highly available and resilient AWS environments.
- Strong troubleshooting, documentation, and communication skills.
- A self-directed, hands-on approach, comfortable handling a broad range of infrastructure responsibilities rather than specializing in one area.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience supporting PCI DSS audits or compliance assessments.
- Experience working with and supporting multi-cloud/hybrid environments.
- Microsoft Azure experience, particularly with infrastructure and networking.
- Experience with infrastructure as code tools such as Terraform or CloudFormation.
- Familiarity with container technologies such as ECS and Docker.
