POSITION TITLE: Assistant Director, Engineering
REPORTS TO: Senior Director of Facilities Management.
Under direction, assists in coordinating and reviewing the work carried out in the department, performs preventive maintenance inspections and provides advice and counsel to the department personnel in order to optimize the maintenance and engineering operations.
Administers and directs programs involving the maintenance of building equipment and the distribution lines for steam, heating hot water, heating, ventilation, air conditioning, refrigeration and piped medical gases. Ability to make emergency decisions; fire, power or equipment failure. Considerable initiative and judgement involved in establishing inspection and maintenance schedules; delegating responsibility to others; selecting equipment and supplies, directing maintenance, repair, and installation activities.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
1. Promote a safe, cooperative and professional health care environment to ensure optimum patient care (as per HR Policy 113c).
2. Adheres to all hospital policies, procedures, rules and regulations, including but not limited to, absenteeism, ETIME, cellular telephone usage, dress code and rules of conduct.
3. Makes Customer Service a priority, treating customers (patients, visitors, and co-workers) in a professional manner exercising courtesy and tact. Effectively communicates with patients and others about SBH services in their area(s) of expertise or responsibility and ensures that concerns, questions or issues reach the right person(s) in SBH in a timely fashion.
4. Formulates and recommends to the Senior Director, engineering services policies and procedures to improve the hospital physical plant and operation.
5. Assists in the overseeing of installation and repair of utilities for conformance with safety and fire regulations in order that all work will meet with inspection standards.
6. Assists in providing inter and intra departmental liaison and consultation services to determine feasibility of new equipment, time spans, projects, etc.
7. Prepares/reviews sketches, diagrams and detailed working drawings for engineering projects.
8. Provides direct craft assistance in an emergency situation and for areas requiring incumbent’s expertise.
9. Under the general supervision of the Senior Director, serves as the chief engineer and in the capacity is responsible for all the operations of all the utility functions of the hospital.
10. Is responsible for custody and distribution of all utilities including heating hot water, steam, condensate, heating, ventilation, air conditioning, refrigeration, medical gas piping.
11. Determination and approval of technical and engineering requirements of contracts for utility services.
12. Keeping operating data, preparing utility reports, implementing energy conservation measures and controlling personnel assigned for performing of utility functions.
13. The preventive maintenance system includes the keeping of records of all equipment and machinery.
14. Implements safety programs to detect, minimize and control fires and other safety hazards. Serves on the Environment of Care Committee.
15. Must be familiar with numerous problems to decide upon their relative importance, rather than base their execution upon sequence in which they were presented. Establishes schedules for routine duties of subordinates, insuring an orderly and efficient accomplishment of duties for which they are responsible.
16. Investigates new products, techniques and procedures in engineering and energy sustainability fields and shall assist in establishing plans for improving department.
17. Attends safety meetings and other professional meeting and seminars.
18. Will perform other duties as delegated by the Senior Director.

QUALIFICATIONS:
A. Education Required – Associate or Baccalaureate degree in Engineering, Business or related areas or equivalent qualifications gained through Hospital experience as determined by the Senior Director.
B. License(s) Required – None; NYC High Pressure Boiler Operating Engineers license or NYC Refrigeration Systems Operating Engineers license preferred.
C. Experience/Skills Required – Five (5) to seven (7) years of progressively responsible plant operations work. Three (3) to five (5) years supervisory experience in category of Chief Engineer.
