Position Purpose:
The Foundry Design Engineer is responsible for the design, engineering, and manufacturing of heat and corrosion-resistant products using stainless steel alloys. This position plays a critical role in developing furnace rolls, furnace fixtures, radiant tubes, cast trays, baskets, gating systems, and other cast alloy parts for foundry operations. The successful candidate will leverage expertise in solid modeling software, 3D printing, additive manufacturing, and gating system design to create innovative and efficient product and process solutions. This position reports directly to the VP of Operations.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
- Design and engineer stainless steel products — including furnace rolls, fixtures, radiant tubes, cast trays, baskets, and other cast alloy parts — ensuring compliance with performance, safety, and quality standards.
- Design and optimize gating systems, risering, and feeding systems for cast alloy components to improve yield, reduce defects, and ensure sound castings.
- Manage and operate the department's 3D printer(s), including scheduling print jobs, maintaining equipment, sourcing materials, and ensuring output quality for prototypes and production tooling.
- Utilize SolidWorks and other software to create detailed 3D models, engineering drawings, and gating system layouts for product designs.
- Conduct stress analysis, thermal simulations, and engineering calculations to validate product designs and ensure they meet specified requirements.
- Leverage 3D printing technology to rapidly prototype patterns, core boxes, gating components, and tooling fixtures, enabling faster development cycles and reduced lead times.
- Collaborate with manufacturing and sales teams to optimize product designs for efficient production processes and incorporate feedback for continuous improvement.
- Stay current with advancements in stainless steel alloy metallurgy, foundry practices, gating and risering technology, and additive manufacturing techniques.
- Participate in project meetings, design reviews, and presentations to communicate technical information and design concepts effectively.
- Maintain detailed documentation of product designs, gating system specifications, engineering calculations, and manufacturing processes.
- Travel to customers and vendors as needed.
Qualifications and Experience:
- Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Metallurgical Engineering, or a related field.
- Minimum of 5 years of experience in foundry engineering, with a focus on heat and corrosion-resistant stainless steel alloys.
- Demonstrated experience designing gating systems, risering, and feeding solutions for cast alloy components.
- Hands-on experience managing and operating 3D printing equipment, including FDM, SLA, or binder-jetting platforms used in foundry pattern-making or tooling applications.
- Preferred experience in designing and manufacturing furnace rolls, furnace fixtures, radiant tubes, cast trays, baskets, and other cast alloy parts.
- Proficiency in SolidWorks and other engineering software, including CAD/CAM, FEA, and CFD tools.
- Strong problem-solving, analytical, and critical thinking skills.
- Excellent communication and collaboration abilities.
Familiarity with industry standards, regulations, and best practices related to foundry operations and stainless steel alloy manufacturing.
