Caribou Medical Center Now Hiring: HIM Coder III (Remote)

Caribou Medical Center is seeking a detail-oriented and experienced HIM Coder III to join our team in a fully remote capacity. This role is responsible for reviewing clinical documentation and accurately assigning medical codes to support proper reimbursement, regulatory compliance, and quality reporting. This position may be offered as part-time, or PRN based on organizational needs and candidate availability.

The ideal candidate is highly knowledgeable in coding practices, able to work independently, and comfortable handling complex cases while collaborating with providers to ensure documentation accuracy. This position plays a vital role in maintaining data integrity and supporting the organization’s overall financial and compliance goals.

Key Responsibilities

Medical Coding & Abstraction

• Accurately assign ICD and CPT codes for:
  • Outpatient clinic and emergency department encounters
  • Outpatient surgical procedures
  • Inpatient and swing bed records (including DRG assignment)
• Ensure timely and precise abstraction of accounts
• Review documentation thoroughly to support compliant code assignment
• Stay current with coding guidelines, best practices, and CMS regulations

Physician Communication & Account Review

• Query providers for clarification on diagnoses, procedures, or incomplete documentation
• Monitor and resolve unbilled accounts in a timely manner
• Collaborate with clinical staff to ensure coding accuracy and completeness

Compliance & Quality Assurance

• Adhere to all applicable coding standards and regulatory requirements
• Support accurate data capture for reimbursement, reporting, and auditing purposes
• Maintain strong attention to detail to ensure data integrity

Health Information & Reporting

• Generate reports using abstracting tools to support health information and operational needs

Department Support & Special Projects

• Assist with departmental tasks, including release of information requests
• Participate in special projects and initiatives as assigned

Clerical & Record Management Duties

• Ensure medical records are complete, accurate, and properly filed within the EHR system
• Scan, upload, and assign documentation to the correct patient records
• Verify required physician signatures are present
• Retrieve records for audits, quality assurance, physician requests, and reporting
• Maintain organized record storage and retrieval processes

Required

• Minimum of 5 years of coding experience
• Proficiency in ICD and CPT coding, with working knowledge of DRG documentation and assignment
• Prior experience in a healthcare setting, preferably within a Health Information Management (HIM) or medical records department
• Strong understanding of medical terminology, anatomy and physiology, pharmacology, and coding principles

Preferred

• RHIT or RHIA certification
• Strong ability to maintain focus on complex and detailed information
• Effective interpersonal skills with the ability to collaborate with peers and leadership
• Clear and professional communication skills when working with hospital staff and physicians
• Ability to manage multiple priorities and adapt to changing assignments
