Position Summary
MHT Technologies is seeking a motivated Junior Hardware Engineer with a strong interest in electronics and printed circuit board (PCB) design to support the development of next-generation smart building and PoE technologies.
This role will work closely with senior engineers on the design, testing, validation, and production of electronic hardware used in commercial building automation systems. The ideal candidate will have hands-on experience with PCB design tools, electronic troubleshooting, and prototype development, and will be eager to grow within a fast-paced engineering environment.
Key Responsibilities
PCB Design & Development
- Assist in the design and layout of printed circuit boards (PCBs) for commercial smart building products.
- Create and maintain schematics, PCB layouts, and supporting design documentation.
- Support component selection, footprint creation, and bill of materials (BOM) management.
- Participate in design reviews and implement engineering change requests (ECRs/ECOs).
- Work with manufacturing partners to ensure designs are optimized for production and assembly.
Product Development
- Support development of PoE-powered control systems, sensors, lighting controls, and connected devices.
- Build and evaluate prototypes for functionality, reliability, and manufacturability.
- Assist with product validation, testing, and certification activities.
- Collaborate with firmware, software, manufacturing, and operations teams throughout the product lifecycle.
Testing & Troubleshooting
- Perform board-level debugging and root-cause analysis.
- Use laboratory equipment such as:
- Oscilloscopes
- Multimeters
- Power supplies
- Logic analyzers
- Network testing equipment
- Conduct electrical, thermal, and functional testing of prototypes and production units.
- Document test procedures and results.
Manufacturing Support
- Assist with new product introduction (NPI) activities.
- Support production troubleshooting and quality improvement initiatives.
- Work with contract manufacturers and internal production teams to resolve hardware-related issues.
- Help maintain engineering documentation, assembly instructions, and test procedures.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor’s Degree in:
- Electrical Engineering
- Electronics Engineering
- Computer Engineering
- Related Engineering Discipline
- 1–3 years of hardware engineering experience.
- Experience designing or modifying PCBs through coursework, internships, co-ops, or professional experience.
- Familiarity with electronic schematics and PCB layout software such as:
- Altium Designer
- KiCad
- OrCAD
- Eagle
- Similar CAD tools
- Understanding of:
- Analog and digital electronics
- Microcontrollers
- Power supplies
- Communication protocols
- Strong troubleshooting and analytical skills.
- Ability to read datasheets and technical specifications.
- Strong documentation and organizational skills.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience with PoE (Power over Ethernet) technologies.
- Familiarity with IEEE 802.3af/at/bt standards.
- Experience designing multi-layer PCBs.
- Exposure to embedded systems and firmware development.
- Knowledge of:
- Ethernet communications
- Sensors
- Building automation systems
- Low-voltage controls
- Experience working with SMT and through-hole assembly processes.
- Familiarity with EMC/EMI design considerations and UL/ETL certification requirements.
