OVERVIEW
The Project Manager is responsible for planning, coordinating, and executing crane and heavy lift operations from project award through completion. This role serves as the primary operational and customer interface, ensuring that projects are safely planned, properly staffed, efficiently executed, and fully compliant with Bay Crane standards and customer requirements.
The Project Manager provides on-site leadership, coordinates closely with customers and internal operations teams, and ensures all lift planning, safety, scheduling, and documentation requirements are met. This position plays a critical role in maintaining Bay Crane’s reputation for safe, reliable, and professional project execution.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
Project Planning & Execution
- Plan and manage crane and heavy lift projects from pre-job planning through closeout.
- Coordinate crane selection, crew assignments, and equipment needs with Operations and Dispatch.
- Develop and/or review lift plans including crane configurations, rigging methods, load weights, site access, and work sequencing.
- Ensure jobsite readiness prior to mobilization, including access routes, set-up areas, and ground conditions.
- Oversee daily execution to ensure work is performed according to plan, schedule, and safety requirements.
- Adjust plans as site conditions change while maintaining safety and efficiency.
Customer & Stakeholder Management
- Serve as Bay Crane’s primary point of contact for assigned projects.
- Build and maintain strong working relationships with customers, general contractors, engineers, and site personnel.
- Lead coordination meetings and provide regular updates on project status.
- Manage scope changes, scheduling conflicts, and operational challenges.
- Ensure customer expectations align with operational capabilities.
Safety, Compliance & Risk Management
- Enforce Bay Crane safety policies and all applicable regulatory and site-specific requirements.
- Participate in job safety analyses, pre-task planning, and pre-lift meetings.
- Ensure proper documentation of lift plans, permits, and safety records.
- Coordinate required training, orientations, and drug screening compliance for assigned personnel.
- Support incident reporting, investigations, and corrective actions.
- Exercise stop-work authority when unsafe conditions exist.
Scheduling & Resource Coordination
- Develop and manage short- and mid-term schedules for crane operations.
- Coordinate work sequencing with customers and internal departments.
- Anticipate resource needs and identify potential conflicts related to staffing, equipment, access, or logistics.
- Support efficient mobilization and demobilization of equipment and crews.
Systems & Documentation (NextGen)
- Create and maintain accurate job records in NextGen.
- Track daily activities, job progress, and service documentation.
- Maintain organized project files including lift plans, permits, approvals, and compliance records.
- Support accurate billing through timely and complete documentation.
On-Site Leadership
- Provide on-site oversight for assigned projects as required.
- Serve as the operational leader for Bay Crane personnel in the field.
- Ensure professionalism, quality of work, and adherence to company standards.
- Act as first point of contact for operational issues at the jobsite.
Continuous Improvement
- Capture lessons learned and recommend improvements to planning and execution processes.
- Contribute to the development of best practices and standard operating procedures.
- Support the growth and professional development of field and project personnel.
Qualifications
Required
- Strong computer skills and ability to work in a documentation-driven environment.
- Excellent organizational, communication, and problem-solving skills.
- Ability to manage multiple projects and priorities simultaneously.
- High attention to detail and strong safety awareness.
- Valid driver’s license and ability to travel to job sites.
- Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Construction Management, or related field or equivalent experience.
- Experience in crane operations, rigging, construction management, or industrial project coordination (internships considered).
- Familiarity with lift planning, heavy equipment operations, or construction logistics.
- Experience working with operational management systems such as NextGen.
