About The Sunday Paper
Maria Shriver's Sunday Paper is an independent, subscriber-supported digital media company built around journalism that informs, inspires, and moves people to think differently. We are not chasing clicks. We are building something our readers return to because it makes them feel smarter, more grounded, and better equipped to live well.
Our ecosystem spans three award-winning newsletters -- The Sunday Paper (Sunday Edition), Be Healthy, and Be Lit. We're a small, fast-moving team that is growing, experimenting, and building something new. The people who join us now will grow with us.
The Role
We are looking for an Editorial and Production Associate to be the operational engine that keeps our three-newsletter ecosystem running. Think of this as the traffic cop role: you are the person who holds the calendar, coordinates across the Senior Editors, keeps production moving, and makes sure nothing falls through the cracks.
Each of our three newsletters has a Senior Editor who owns its content and voice. Your job is to work alongside and in support of all three -- managing the shared editorial calendar, handling outreach and booking, writing and editing smaller features as needed, and overseeing production for our interview series and live events. You will also work closely with our Newsletter Coordinator, who handles the backend build of every issue, to ensure each edition moves through production on time and without error.
Strong writing is an asset in this role, and we'll ask for samples. But we're hiring first for range and reliability. The ideal candidate is someone who can do a little of everything well: coordinate a complex editorial calendar in the morning, set up cameras and run an interview in the afternoon, and proofread a newsletter on a Saturday evening without missing a beat.
This is a full-time, fully in-office position based in Brentwood, CA. Medical benefits included.
Editorial Responsibilities
- Own the shared editorial calendar across all three newsletters -- The Sunday Paper, Be Healthy, and Be Lit -- tracking and coordinating coverage of book releases, pitched submissions, news-making events, anniversaries, holidays, film releases, trending topics, and up-and-coming public figures
- Monitor breaking news and flag stories that may warrant real-time commentary from Maria or original coverage in the paper
- Collaborate with all three Senior Editors to align coverage across the right channels, avoiding duplication and spotting opportunities for cross-vertical coordination
- Handle outreach and booking for features, interview subjects, and original op-eds across the ecosystem
- Write and edit smaller editorial features within each newsletter as directed by the Senior Editors
- Oversee updates to graphic assets across email and the website (Photoshop and/or Illustrator experience a plus)
- Work closely with the Newsletter Coordinator on backend production, monitoring for bugs and technical issues and escalating as needed; newsletter and website backend experience is a significant plus
- Lead team editorial meetings with energy -- bringing ideas to the table and creating space for others to contribute
- Report on content performance across newsletters, offering context around wins and areas for growth
- Contribute to the weekly team brief, including social metrics, interview series updates, and upcoming editorial coverage
- Identify editorial hooks for archival content worth surfacing and revisiting
- Proofread the final Sunday Edition each Saturday evening for typos, working links, and any missed errors before send
Production Responsibilities
Life Above the Noise Interview Series
- Develop comprehensive interview prep for our award-winning interview series, including familiarity with each guest's recent work, contextual background for the interviewer, proposed questions, and guest prep coordination
- Schedule, set up, and manage all recording sessions -- including physically configuring cameras, lighting, audio, and AV equipment, and running the in-room side of interviews, meetings, and live events
- Secure and organize all interview video files
- Review interviews and identify clips; coordinate with the editor on final cuts, with the ability to cut independently when time-sensitive (video editing experience a plus)
- Publish full interviews to YouTube in coordination with the social team, and build the corresponding webpage (light coding knowledge helpful -- easily learned on the job)
- Create and design interview assets including stills, thumbnails, and graphics
- Build interview series release emails in collaboration with marketing, including all graphics
- Proofread and schedule final interview series emails for delivery
Misc Production Needs
- Attend events to capture footage and photos, distributing assets to social, marketing, and other teams across our ecosystem
- Film on-site video -- interview footage, social clips, and marketing assets -- with the ability to turn around content quickly under deadline
In-Office & Operations
- Review and workshop materials live with Maria and the team; participate actively in brainstorms
- Serve as the in-office point person for real-time questions on newsletter edition status, outreach, and issue performance
- Receive and field books and other materials sent by publishers for coverage consideration
- Answer calls from our paid membership community who need assistance
Who You Are
- At least five years of experience in media, journalism, communications, digital publishing, or a related field
- A utility player at heart -- you take pride in being the person who knows what's happening across every track and can step in wherever needed
- Organized enough to manage a complex, multi-newsletter editorial calendar without losing the thread, and flexible enough to pivot when priorities shift
- A solid writer with good news sense -- you know what a good story is and you can turn clear, clean copy when called on
- Comfortable receiving and acting on messages outside of standard hours, including weekends -- this is a mission-driven, start-up-minded team and the work moves quickly
- A collaborative, low-ego team player who takes direction well and makes the people around you better
- Technically capable and curious -- you pick up new platforms and tools quickly and don't shy away from the hands-on side of production
- Excited about being part of something growing -- the kind of person who sees an early role at an independent media company as an opportunity, not a stepping stone to somewhere else
- Based in or able to commute daily to Brentwood, CA
Bonus Points
- Newsletter and/or website backend experience (ESP platforms, CMS, basic HTML)
- Video production or editing experience (Adobe Premiere, Final Cut Pro, or similar)
- Familiarity with Adobe Creative Suite (Photoshop, Illustrator)
- Experience in digital media, subscriber-supported journalism, or independent publishing
