We are seeking a highly skilled and strategic GIS Consultant to join our infrastructure and utilities practice. In this role, you will bridge the gap between complex spatial data analytics, advanced cartographic design, and high-level business intelligence. You will be responsible for designing automated geospatial workflows, managing critical data integrations, and producing executive-ready, high-fidelity map products that drive decisions in utility reliability and regulatory compliance.
The ideal candidate blends programming and data integration skills with an expert eye for cartography. You know how to transform dense engineering and municipal data into clean, scannable, and visually compelling spatial layouts for clients and regulatory bodies.
Key Responsibilities
- Advanced Cartography & Visualization: Design and produce high-quality static and dynamic map products, custom map series, and interactive dashboards. Apply advanced cartographic principles (symbology, typography, hierarchy, and layout design) to make complex utility and boundary data immediately intuitive for non-technical stakeholders.
- Process Automation & Core Development: Design, write, and maintain robust Python scripts using ArcPy and open-source spatial libraries to automate map production (e.g., automated map books), ETL processes, and complex spatial analyses.
- Enterprise Integration: Oversee the seamless integration of disparate data types, specifically bridging the gap between engineering CAD environments and enterprise GIS databases to ensure design files are accurately represented in the final GIS environment.
- Regulatory & Boundary Intelligence: Manage and analyze complex municipal and regional datasets, ensuring precise mapping and clear cartographic reporting of critical regulatory boundaries, service areas, and Extraterritorial Jurisdictions (ETJ).
- UAS Data Capture & Processing: Serve as a commercial remote pilot to support targeted field data collection. Utilize ArcGIS Drone2Map to process targeted aerial captures, integrating the resulting data directly into standard GIS workflows and map layouts.
General Requirements & Qualifications
Technical Proficiencies
- GIS Suite & Production: Advanced mastery of ESRI ArcGIS Pro and ArcGIS Enterprise. Strong expertise in ArcGIS Pro layout design, map series generation, and advanced label expression/symbology engines (e.g., Arcade, Maplex).
- Programming & Automation: Strong proficiency in Python (ArcPy, Arcpy.mapping, Pandas, NumPy) for building custom tools, automating geoprocessing models, and driving automated map production.
- Data Integration: Proven experience converting and conflating CAD (.dwg, .dgn) data into structured GIS formats while maintaining strict data integrity and coordinate system accuracy.
- Photogrammetry preferred: Familiarity with ArcGIS Drone2Map for processing basic drone-captured assets and imagery into GIS layers.
Field Operations & Licensing
- UAS Licensure preferred: current FAA Part 107 Remote Pilot Certificate for commercial drone operations is preferred, or ability to obain.
- Flight Experience: Practical experience operating commercial UAS platforms for targeted site mapping and infrastructure documentation.
Experience & Education
- Education: Bachelor’s degree in Geographic Information Science (GIS), Geography, Cartography, Civil Engineering, or a closely related technical field.
- OR Professional Experience: 7+ years of progressive experience in GIS application development, cartographic design, or infrastructure consulting, preferably within the utility, municipal, or environmental sectors.
- Portfolio: Ability to demonstrate or discuss a portfolio of high-quality cartographic work, including complex infrastructure layouts, boundary mapping, or executive report graphics.
