The Meredith Center of Career Services and Professional Development (CSPD) and Student Services and Engagement in the College of Law at West Virginia University is currently accepting applications for an Assistant Director.
About the Opportunity
The Assistant Director will work to assist in carrying out the mission of the CSPD and Student Services at the WVU College of Law. The AD will provide career counseling and advising, manage and implement career services programming, support employer development, and will manage and implement student services programming while assisting in student services support activities. The AD is directly supervised by the Director of the CSPD while also working under the Assistant Dean for Student Services and Engagement in a dual reporting structure.

What You'll Do
Career Counseling/Advising
-
Provide one-on-one career coaching to currently enrolled students and alumni on topics including career planning, career goals, career options and opportunities; application material review and revision; and production of job-search related materials.

Develop and deliver a comprehensive program to prepare students for in-person and virtual interviews.
-
Assist in advising students regarding all types of summer internship/clerkship and post-graduate career opportunities.
-
Recruit students to participate in special programs including off-site job fairs, information sessions, networking events, and programming.
-
Provide one-on-one and group training on various job search strategies.
-
Coordinate twice annual On-Campus Interviewing (OCI) programs spanning 2-3 weeks each and attended by 15-20 prospective employers.

Plan and implement strategies and workshops to coach and direct students about best practices during the employment search process, including effective self-presentation and the development of job search-related materials.

Encourage and direct students’ professional identity development as they move through the job search process and work collaboratively with Student Services and our Behavioral Health counselor to encourage student engagement in student affairs and wellness programming.

Maintain appropriate records of student outreach and counseling while adhering to relevant confidentiality protocols.

Develop and implement survey tools to evaluate satisfaction of various constituent groups with CSPD, including OCI support, summer employment status, and desired field of practice. Utilize statistical methods to gauge the significance of results and feedback.
Employer Relations
-
Assist Director of CSPD by serving as a vital external relations liaison, particularly during OCI sessions.

Oversee job postings, online resume collections, and facilitation of off-site and/or video OCI, as needed.

Act as the College of Law internal coordinator for participation in various job fairs around the country.
-
Maintain records and develop contacts with current and potential employers, members of the Bar, the judiciary, and other schools’ career offices to build relationships with parties that help to expand employment opportunities for students.

Analyze survey feedback to provide input to CSPD’s strategic planning process, particularly with respect to employer outreach and employer education.
Management and Administration of Student Programming
-
Assist in design and implementation of CSPD professional skills programs to prepare students for employment. Programming may include career services orientation, mock interviewing, networking, professional etiquette, appropriate attire, internet/social media presence, and other related programs as needed in 21st century legal workplace.

Assist in design and implementation of Student Services and Engagement programming and events designed to aid students in their professional identity development and professional skills. Programming may include orientation, honors day, wellness and performance skills, mentoring programs, leadership development programming, community building events, community service and pro bono programming, and student organization programming.

Provide event support and assist in event management for Student Services programs and events, including New Student Orientation, Graduation, Honors Day, Student organization fair, Community Service/Pro Bono fair, Pro Bono week, other community building programming and events, and related wellness, performance, and professional identity development programming.
Professional Relationships/Activities
-
Assist with updates/determinations of graduates’ employment status to ensure accurate reporting to American Bar Association, National Association of Law Placement, and U.S. News and World Report.

Participate in Professional organizations in support of their work, including the National Association of Law Placement, National Association for Law Student Affairs Professionals, American Association of Law Schools, and related organizations.

Serve on College of Law committees at the discretion of William J. Maier, Jr. Dean of the College of Law.

Participate in law school events including but not limited to: New Student Orientation, Career Services Orientation, Admitted Students Day/Discover WVU Law Day, Graduation Fair, Graduation, Honors Day, Homecoming, Visiting Committee meetings, and other college-wide events as needed.
Qualifications
-
Master’s degree in a relevant field (e.g., MBA, Counseling, Social Work, Human Resources, or Public Administration).
-
A minimum of three (3) years of experience in public sector, private sector, or public interest legal practice, student advising, legal recruiting, or a combination of these areas.

All qualifications must be met by the time of employment.

Leadership/management skills to independently implement and oversee multiple events with minimal supervision

Ability to conduct one-on-one and group career coaching sessions, including sensitivity to interests of students and employers with wide-ranging credentials

Knowledge and practice of career services/student services development methods, practices, resources, standards, and theories.

Ability to create, administer, and evaluate student services’ programming and events.

Knowledge and practice of student services development theories and methods, practices, resources, and standards.

Demonstrated ability to make independent and informed decisions as well as an awareness of current issues in legal career services and a broad understanding of the evolving job market of law graduates.
