Job Summary
At Opus Interactive, technology meets humanity. We’re a high-compliance cloud and colocation provider that delivers secure, high-performance private/hybrid cloud, IaaS, and managed services from Tier III+ data centers in Oregon, Texas, and Virginia. We believe in doing great work for great people — while caring deeply about our customers, our communities, and the planet we all share.
The Role
We’re looking for a self-directed, customer-facing Systems Engineer to join our operations team in Manassas, Virginia. This is a hands-on, project-heavy role where you’ll work side-by-side with senior engineers to deliver dedicated private cloud and IaaS solutions for enterprise customers. You’ll blend deep technical expertise with genuine human connection — spotting opportunities to solve real problems and making customers feel truly supported.
If you love both technology and people, and you thrive when your work has visible impact, we’d love to meet you.
Location Requirement (must-read)
This role requires regular, in‑person work at the Manassas, VA datacenter. Candidates must live locally or be able to reliably commute to Manassas, VA (20109). Remote applicants who cannot work on site will not be considered.
Core must-have qualifications
· U.S. Citizen (required due to the nature of the role and compliance standards).
· Proven, hands‑on datacenter experience: racking, powering, running structured cabling, cable management, copper & fiber patching, and fiber handling best practices.
· Strong familiarity with network gear and optical transceivers (SFP/SFP+/QSFP family) and cabling standards.
· Experience working on physical hardware: rack servers, storage arrays, switches — setup, troubleshooting, and parts replacement.
· Administration experience with virtualization platforms and technologies. (VMware vSphere/ESXi/vCenter strongly preferred; other hypervisors or container platforms acceptable from an admin standpoint).
· Server OS management experience: solid Windows Server skills and strong Linux experience (Linux emphasis).
· Minimum 5 years hands‑on systems engineering or equivalent service‑provider/enterprise experience.
· Excellent written and verbal English communication skills.
· Self-motivated with a strong work ethic and the ability to drive projects forward independently while staying collaborative.
Key Role Responsibilities
Work independently on assigned tasks while collaborating closely with senior engineers and the broader team.
· Infrastructure management (~70%)
You will lead and execute infrastructure projects from design through successful handover. This includes:
o Build, configure, and maintain virtualization clusters, container platforms, storage, network, and compute in a multi‑tenant datacenter.
o Troubleshoot across hypervisor, orchestration, storage, network, and OS layers.
o Deploy/manage backups (Veeam experience strongly preferred).
o Assist with provisioning, system migrations, upgrades, capacity planning, and performance tuning.
o Document configurations, procedures, and project deliverables to Opus standards.
o Provide customer‑facing support: requirements gathering, updates, and support tickets.
· Datacenter work (~30%)
You will work hands-on inside the data center:
o Perform physical rack & stack work, cabling, power installs, patching, and hardware repairs/replacements.
o Perform Remote Hands/Smart Hands tasks and assist with migrations, upgrades, capacity planning, and documentation.
o Provisioning of new infrastructure and customer assets within the datacenter.
o Occasional datacenter tours to prospects.
Qualifications
· Datacenter cabling & physical operations (copper & fiber patching, cable management, power/circuit basics).
· Hardware troubleshooting and parts replacement for rack servers, storage, and network devices.
· Virtualization administration.
· Linux administration (preferred) and Windows Server administration.
· Networking fundamentals: DNS, TCP/IP, VLANs, switching, routing, firewalls.
· Storage fundamentals: SAN/NAS, iSCSI, NFS.
· Scripting/automation: PowerShell, Python, or shell scripting.
· Excellent written & verbal communication; customer interaction experience.
Nice To Have
· Veeam certification or extensive hands‑on backup experience.
· Experience with Kubernetes/OpenShift and containerized workloads.
· Multiple virtualization platform experience (VMware, OpenShift, Verge.io, Proxmox).
· Service‑provider or colocation operations background.
Logistics & Work Model
· Location: Manassas, VA datacenter (20109).
· Work model: On‑site work required. Occasional optional remote work.
· Schedule: Weekday hours, scheduled weeknight and weekend maintenance/outages, emergency on‑call (backup only).
