Position Overview:
Are you a seasoned mechanical estimator with a passion for precision, leadership, and problem-solving? At IAC/Adelphi Construction, we are searching for a Senior Mechanical Estimator who will be a key player in delivering complex, high-value mechanical projects. This role requires a strategic thinker who can work independently and collaboratively, someone who thrives on taking a project from the conceptual stage to a detailed cost estimate that win’s business and drives growth. Your primary focus will be to estimate a variety of mechanical projects, including structural steel erection, equipment pre-assembly and installation, piping and ducting installation, and other critical components of our Engineer, Procure, Construct (EPC) and Standard Engineered Products (SEP) projects. You will play an integral role in shaping the future of our construction projects, working on the cutting edge of the industry with a company that self-performs nearly all scopes of work except electrical. In this role, you’ll have the opportunity to lead project estimation from start to finish, building client relationships, mentoring junior estimators, and partnering with cross-functional teams to ensure success in every project. Key Responsibilities:
Estimation & Proposal Development:
- Lead Estimating Projects: You will lead the estimation process for a wide range of mechanical projects, including structural steel erection, equipment pre-assembly, installation, piping, and ducting installations. From conceptual estimates to detailed bid submissions, you will be responsible for crafting accurate, competitive estimates that win contracts.
- Proposal Writing: Take ownership of crafting clear, detailed, and compelling proposals that communicate the value we bring to our clients. Your proposals will outline not just costs but solutions that meet client needs and align with our project execution strategy.
- Scope Identification: Collaborate with clients, engineers, and project managers to identify project scopes. You’ll assess project drawings, fill in scope gaps, and ensure that all necessary components are accounted for in estimates.
Client Relations & Collaboration:
- Client Point of Contact: Become the primary point of contact with clients, representing IAC/Adelphi in meetings and ensuring open communication throughout the project lifecycle. You’ll schedule and manage services, addressing any client concerns or changes in scope.
- Vendor & Subcontractor Management: Build and nurture strong relationships with vendors and subcontractors to ensure competitive pricing, quality materials, and timely delivery of services. You’ll work with approved partners to ensure safety, scheduling, and costs align with project expectations.
- Cross-Functional Collaboration: Work with the sales engineering team to gather information on new projects, enabling accurate estimates. You’ll also partner with project management teams to ensure seamless handoffs from estimation to execution.
Leadership & Team Development:
- Mentorship & Training: Act as a mentor to junior staff and entry-level estimators, providing training, guidance, and support to help them develop their skills and grow within the company. You’ll play a key role in building a strong, capable estimating team.
- Peer Reviews & Process Improvement: Lead peer reviews of estimates and analyze completed project data to continuously improve the accuracy and efficiency of our estimation methods.
Cost Optimization & Innovation:
- Cost Tracking & Analysis: Use real-time cost tracking data from completed projects to enhance the accuracy of future estimates. By studying historical cost data, you’ll drive efficiencies and help maximize profit margins on future bids.
- Value Engineering: Think critically and strategically to identify ways to reduce costs without compromising project quality. Your insights will be invaluable in helping clients achieve their goals within budget constraints.
Project Management Support:
- Pre-Construction Coordination: Once a project is awarded, you’ll chair a Kick Off / Hand Off meeting, ensuring all relevant details are communicated to the project management team. This is key to ensuring a smooth transition and project success.
- Change Orders: Assist project managers with estimating change orders, ensuring that additional scopes of work are accurately priced and timely.
Additional Responsibilities:
- Bid Reviews & RFIs: Ensure all project RFIs (Requests for Information) are generated in a timely manner before the bid phase to clarify any uncertainties and secure accurate information for bidding.
- Safety & Compliance: You’ll oversee project safety requirements and compliance, working closely with the safety team to ensure that projects are executed safely and efficiently.
- Preliminary Scheduling: Using Microsoft Project, you’ll build out preliminary schedules to ensure realistic and achievable timelines are in place for each project.
- Close-Out & Billing: Ensure that all close-out paperwork is completed promptly so that billing for completed services can be issued without delays.
What You’ll Bring:
- Experience: 10+ years of relevant experience in mechanical estimation, with a proven track record of estimating and delivering successful mechanical projects.
- Education: A Bachelor’s Degree in Construction Management, Construction Science, or a related field is highly preferred. A CEP (Certified Estimating Professional) or PMP certification is a strong plus.
- Technical Skills: Proficiency in MS Office (especially Excel), Bluebeam, and other construction management software. Familiarity with Microsoft Project is crucial for scheduling.
- Detail-Oriented: You must have exceptional attention to detail, with the ability to spot potential issues before they arise and ensure the accuracy of every estimate.
- Communication Skills: Strong verbal and written communication skills are essential for interacting with clients, vendors, and internal teams.
- Field Experience: Practical field experience is highly valued, as it will enhance your ability to accurately estimate projects and understand the real-world challenges of construction.
