The Learning Objective (LO) Sequence & Instructional Design Specialist is responsible for designing granular learning objective sequences and developing instructional and assessment guidance that supports the creation of high-quality math learning content.
This role focuses on breaking mathematical concepts into precise, teachable skills; sequencing those skills based on standards and research; and providing clear instructional and problem design notes that guide Script Writers and Problem Designers during production.
The ideal candidate has strong knowledge of elementary math instruction, curriculum progression, and learning science, with the ability to think systematically about how students develop mathematical understanding over time.
Responsibilities
Design Granular Learning Objective Sequences
- Break broad mathematical topics into highly specific learning objectives (LOs)
- Design prerequisite-aligned skill progressions
- Ensure sequences align with standards, research, and developmental readiness
- Identify appropriate instructional groupings (chapters, lessons, subskills)
- Refine scope to ensure each LO measures a single teachable skill
Develop Instructional Notes for Script Designers
- Provide instructional guidance for teaching each LO
- Identify:
- Recommended models and strategies
- Common misconceptions
- Suggested vocabulary and representations
- Instructional focus points
- Clarify what should and should not be taught within the LO scope
- Ensure notes support clear, student-friendly instruction
Develop Problem Design Notes
- Provide guidance for assessment and practice design
- Define:
- Dataset constraints
- Appropriate representations and visuals
- Acceptable problem types
- Interaction expectations
- Cognitive load considerations
- Ensure problems align directly to the instructional intent
Research & Curriculum Alignment
- Review standards, curricula, and research to guide sequencing decisions
- Analyze progression expectations across grade levels
- Ensure alignment to instructional best practices and learning trajectories
- Support consistency across the curriculum system
Cross-Functional Collaboration
- Collaborate with:
- Director
- Content Manager
- LO Lead
- Instructional Leads
- Problem Leads
- Clarify instructional intent during production
- Support alignment between teaching and assessment
Continuous Improvement
- Revise sequences and notes based on:
