Position Summary:

We are seeking an experienced Mineral Process Engineer to join our team located in Pittsburgh, PA. You will design, develop, and optimize processes to extract valuable minerals from solid or liquid mine waste. Key responsibilities include conducting feasibility studies, selecting equipment, implementing crushing, grinding, and flotation techniques, analyzing data, ensuring safety and environmental compliance, and collaborating with other engineers.

Responsibilities:

In this position you will not only focus on the efficient and sustainable extraction of mineral resources but also ensure that these processes align with environmental regulations and safety standards. In this role, you will leverage advanced techniques in critical mineral processing, chemical engineering, and environmental management to optimize resource extraction, improve operational efficiency, and minimize environmental footprint.

• Process Design & Optimization: Develop and optimize mineral processing flowsheets, including comminution, classification, flotation, magnetic/electrostatic separation, and/or gravity concentration.
• Integration with Hydrometallurgy: Work with hydrometallurgists to couple physical separation with chemical recovery methods (leaching, solvent extraction, ion exchange, and/or electrowinning).
• Pilot Plant Development: Design, commission, and operate pilot-scale processing equipment to validate process performance.
• Process Modeling: Conduct mass and energy balance modeling, process simulations, and scale-up studies.
• Feedstock Analysis: Characterize mineralogy, particle size distribution, and liberation to inform process selection and design.
• Techno-Economic Input: Provide engineering input for process cost modeling and capital/operational expenditure estimates.
• Cross-functional Collaboration: Work with R&D scientists, engineers, and business team members to align process development with commercialization goals.
• Safety & Compliance: Ensure that process development adheres to environmental, health, and safety best practices.

Required:

• B.S. or M.S. in Mineral Processing, Chemical Engineering, Materials Science, or related field.
• Hands-on experience with mineral processing techniques (e.g., flotation, gravity separation, magnetic/electrostatic separation, etc.).
• Strong background in process modeling, flowsheet development, and data analysis.
• Demonstrated ability to move projects from lab-scale testing toward pilot-scale implementation.
• Excellent technical writing and communication skills.
• Self-starter comfortable working in a fast-paced startup environment.

Preferred:

• Ph.D. or industrial experience in critical minerals, rare earth elements, or battery materials recovery.
• Experience designing, building, and running pilot or demonstration plants.
• Knowledge of process simulation software (e.g. HSC Chemistry, or Aspen Plus).
• Familiarity with waste valorization and circular economy applications.
• Track record of innovation (patents, publications, process development achievements).
