We are seeking a hands-on Maintenance Engineer ensuring the safe, reliable, and efficient operation of plant equipment and automation systems across the processing facility. This role supports Maintenance Management in delivering site reliability goals through both preventive and reactive maintenance, equipment optimization, and continuous improvement initiatives.
This role is critical and focuses on response time, root cause analysis, and proactive maintenance, the role is essential to maintaining uptime, ensuring compliance, and supporting business objectives and operational excellence across the facility.
What You’ll Do:
- Conduct and lead preventive and corrective maintenance on high-speed packaging and processing equipment, including slicers, grinders, conveyors, vacuum packers, weighers, and labelling lines.
- Diagnose, troubleshoot, and repair electrical, mechanical, pneumatic, and hydraulic systems, including PLCs, VFDs, sensors, and control panels.
- Perform root cause analysis on breakdowns and implement permanent corrective actions to reduce unplanned downtime.
- Support the planning, scheduling, and execution of preventive maintenance programs to ensure plant reliability and uptime.
- Ensure all maintenance activities comply with GMP, HACCP, WHS, and food safety standards.
- Coordinate with external contractors to ensure safe and high-quality maintenance or project work.
Technical Expertise & Equipment Ownership
- Develop deep technical knowledge of European equipment (Variovac, Multivac, Marelec etc.) and act as the on-site subject matter expert.
- Collaborate with suppliers and our maintenance inventory specialist for parts procurement, service coordination, and equipment optimization.
- Support installation, commissioning, and modification of new machinery and systems.
- Contribute to equipment and process improvement projects that enhance safety, performance, and energy efficiency.
- Maintain accurate documentation in the Computerized Maintenance Management System, ensuring data integrity and traceability.
Operational Performance & Improvement
- Work with the Maintenance Management and Operations team to identify and deliver process and equipment improvements.
- Monitor and report key performance metrics, including downtime, response time, and maintenance completion rates.
- Support budget control, spare parts management, and maintenance cost optimization initiatives.
- Participate in continuous improvement and lean projects to increase operational efficiency and equipment reliability.
Workplace Health & Safety
- Promote a safety-first culture by adhering to all LOTO, PPE, and confined space protocols.
- Ensure a safe working environment for all team members, contractors, and visitors.
- Report and assist in investigating any safety incidents, equipment hazards, or near misses.
- Lead by example in maintaining a compliant and proactive approach to WHS and food safety requirements.
Team & Collaboration
- Collaborate closely with Production, Quality Assurance, Safety and Maintenance teams to minimize downtime and optimize performance.
- Provide technical guidance, share knowledge, and support the ongoing development of maintenance team members.

Skills & Experience
- Minimum 2+ years’ experience in maintenance or engineering roles within a meat or food processing facility.
- Demonstrated hands-on expertise with European equipment (e.g., Variovac, Multivac, Marelec, Handtmann).
- Proficiency in electrical and mechanical troubleshooting, including 24VDC control systems, 480VAC power circuits, PLC-controlled machinery, and automation networks.
- Strong understanding of preventive maintenance strategies, reliability-based maintenance, and equipment optimization.
- Knowledge of GMP, HACCP, SSOP, WHS, and food safety standards.
- Excellent communication, problem-solving, and analytical skills with a proactive, detail-oriented mindset.
- Ability to lift up to 60lbs, climb ladders, and work in cold, damp, and fast-paced environments.
- Forklift license and/or relevant trade qualifications (preferred).
