Job Title: Lead Robotic Welding Programmer & Operator (Class A)
Position Overview
DSI Manufacturing is seeking a high-skilled Class A Robotic Welding Programmer & Operator to serve as the Subject Matter Expert (SME) and foundational leader of our robotic welding department. This is not just an operator role; you will have full technical ownership of our automation systems, programming new and legacy parts, designing advanced fixturing, and mentoring standard welding personnel.
If you are a master welder with deep expertise in advanced robotics (ABB, Fanuc) who thrives on optimizing cycles, reducing downtime, and driving continuous improvement, this role offers the autonomy and technical challenge you are looking for.
Key Responsibilities
- Automation Programming & Optimization: Program, set up, and prove out all new robotic welding jobs. Utilize simulation and programming software to optimize cycles and systematically upgrade legacy programs for maximum efficiency.
- Fixturing & Engineering Collaboration: Design and build complex, precision welding fixtures and jigs. Partner with Engineering and Planners to review part printability and ensure fixturing is completed ahead of production runs.
- Department Leadership & Training: Serve as the shop’s "Go-To" resource for complex parts. Train, mentor, and cross-train manual welders to safely operate and run production on robotic systems.
- Production Planning: Partner with the Fabrication Supervisor and Scheduler to identify upcoming high-potential robotic jobs, manage the robot’s production schedule, and keep operations running lean.
- Advanced Manual Welding: Perform high-level manual MIG and TIG production welding on complex layouts and various metals when needed.
- System Maintenance & Vendor Relations: Perform preventative and basic maintenance to minimize machine downtime. Serve as the technical point of contact with automation vendors (OSC, ABB, Fanuc) to troubleshoot complex mechanical or software issues.
- Quality & Data Integrity: Ensure 100% compliance with DSI’s ISO 9001:2015 quality standards. Perform part inspections, manage fixture inventory locations, and accurately track jobs, quantities, and time using our Epicor ERP system.
Qualifications & Experience
- Experience: Minimum of 5 years of dedicated robotic welding, offline programming, and industrial automation experience.
- Welding Background: 5+ years of professional manufacturing welding experience, demonstrating a mastery of MIG/TIG methods across various metals, complicated layouts, and blueprint reading (including deep understanding of tight tolerances and dimensions).
- Education: High School Diploma or equivalent required. A 2-year technical degree in Welding Technology, Robotic Automation, or a related trade field is highly preferred.
- Platform Knowledge: Direct hands-on experience troubleshooting and programming ABB or Fanuc robotic arms. Familiarity with modern ERP environments (e.g., Epicor Kinetic) is a significant plus.
Key Competencies
- Autonomy: Ability to plan, execute, and troubleshoot highly technical sequences of operations with little to no supervision.
- Problem-Solving: Exceptional mechanical aptitude and advanced troubleshooting skills for both weld defects and robotic programming faults.
- Collaboration: Strong verbal and written communication skills to effectively bridge gaps between the shop floor, engineering, and project management.
- Physical Demands: Ability to lift, push, or pull up to 25 pounds daily, and occasionally heavier loads as required by structural fixturing.
