Position: PLC Automation Specialist
Schedule: 7/7 (Rotation)
Location: Carlsbad NM
As a Mid-Level Automation Technician, you will play a critical role in maintaining, troubleshooting, and optimizing automation systems that support onshore oil and gas production operations. Serving as the local subject matter expert for control systems, you will be responsible for PLC/HMI programming, instrumentation diagnostics, loop tuning, system commissioning, and ensuring the reliability of automation assets across multiple field locations.
This position requires a self-motivated professional with strong Allen-Bradley experience who can quickly assess problems, implement solutions, and operate with minimal supervision.
Key ResponsibilitiesMaintenance & Troubleshooting
- Troubleshoot, diagnose, and repair Allen-Bradley PLCs, including ControlLogix and CompactLogix platforms, as well as RTUs and HMIs.
- Calibrate, maintain, and troubleshoot instrumentation including level, pressure, flow, temperature, and vibration devices.
- Support the integrity and reliability of automation systems at well pads, tank batteries, SWD facilities, and compressor stations.
- Perform loop checks, identify control issues, and optimize system performance.
Programming & Commissioning
- Develop, modify, and troubleshoot PLC programs using Studio 5000, including Ladder Logic, Function Block, and Structured Text programming.
- Configure and commission new automation installations utilizing P&IDs, Cause and Effect matrices, control narratives, and loop documentation.
- Design, modify, and maintain FactoryTalk View HMI graphics, alarms, and operator interfaces.
- Assist with startup activities and field acceptance testing of automation systems.
Data & Systems Management
- Utilize SAP or other CMMS platforms for work planning, maintenance documentation, and equipment history tracking.
- Maintain accurate records of repairs, programming changes, and calibration activities.
- Adhere to Management of Change (MOC) procedures and corporate programming standards.
Safety & Compliance
- Perform all work in accordance with OSHA, NEC, NFPA, and company safety requirements.
- Safely work around energized equipment and participate in lockout/tagout procedures.
- Comply with confined space, hot work, and other applicable permit requirements.
- Promote a strong safety culture and proactively identify potential hazards.
Minimum Qualifications
Education
- Associate degree in Instrumentation, Automation, Electrical Technology, or a related field; OR
- GED/High School Diploma with equivalent industry experience.
Experience
- Minimum of 3 years of experience as an Automation Technician, Automation Specialist, or Instrumentation & Controls Technician.
- Minimum of 3 years of oil and gas field operations experience.
Required Technical Skills
- Extensive hands-on experience with Allen-Bradley platforms, including:
- Studio 5000
- ControlLogix
- CompactLogix
- FactoryTalk View
- Strong understanding of analog and discrete I/O systems.
- Experience with Ethernet/IP and Modbus communications.
- Ability to read and interpret:
- P&IDs
- Wiring diagrams
- Loop sheets
- Control narratives
- Cause and Effect matrices.
Additional Requirements
- Ability and willingness to work a strict 7 days on / 7 days off rotational schedule.
- Ability to travel independently to remote field locations.
- Valid driver's license with an acceptable driving record.
- Ability to operate aerial lifts and work under supplied air when required.
- Must be able to work outdoors in varying weather conditions and perform the physical demands of the position.
Preferred Qualifications
- Previous experience supporting production facilities in the oil and gas industry.
- Knowledge of RTU communications and SCADA systems.
- Experience with startup and commissioning activities.
- Familiarity with corporate MOC processes and programming standards.
