Not The Company It Was

Pros

Have to write something so, they had snacks and the location downtown was nice and benefits were comparable to what we had at Classified Ventures.

Cons

Since CoStar bought the company it has been down hill. They took what was once a great place to work where people cared about our product, customers and employees to an atmosphere of who cares...I'm only here for a paycheck. They continue to lay off all the original apartments.com staff so nobody will be left that remember how great we were. The CEO is an egotistical little man that we nicknamed "Napoleon". Its his way or the highway who has surrounded himself with "yes" men/women. So Mr. Napoleon spend 100 million dollars on advertising but your still just a little man with deep pockets.

Pros

None. But seriously, since Glassdoor requires at least 5 words for the Pros section, I will say that they have a very nice office building.

Cons

Every single thing about this company is one giant con. Stay away. I cannot think of enough ways to seriously warn you and not work here. Prior to CoStar acquiring Apartments in April 2014, this was the greatest company to work for. I made lifelong friends, enjoyed coming to work every day and loved my boss. CoStar has completely destroyed everything we worked so hard to create there. I've seen coworkers get belittled, had all of their responsibilities taken away and gotten laid off. I've seen beloved coworkers leave because they were so unhappy working there, including the president of Apartments that the entire company loved. The CEO of CoStar, Andy Florance, is a narcissistic jerk. It's his way or the highway. He is literally involved in every last decision, no matter how small it is. I read an article about him last year, where he says he questions the methodology Glassdoor uses in their rankings. People are literally telling him that his company is terrible to work for and that leads him to believe Glassdoor is biased, instead of actually looking at the problem. I can't tell you how many times someone has told me they literally only work there for the money. I mean good for you, you're making money while working at a morally corrupt company. Andy's response to any issue is either to sue or throw money at it. How's that for a role model? Seriously. Do just one google search on the guy and it'll be enough for you to never want to work here either.

Pros

Decent space. Commuter benefits.

Cons

Everything except for the stuff listed above. Working for Apartments.com became a nightmare after it was acquired by CoStar in 2014. CoStar came into the multifamily community not knowing anything about the customers, the consumers or the culture of the business. They claim they're a savvy, smart and high-tech company, but they really don't know anything about running a consumer facing internet business. Spending a lot of money on advertising was their innovation. They like to throw a lot of money at people, especially the higher ups, to go along with whatever the CEO dictates. All decisions are based off of what he wants, likes or mere fear of what will happen if you don't do as your told. Management is a mess, with people reporting into folks in DC, with little or no engagement. When people have been let go, they haven't been replaced and their jobs have just been absorbed by the DC office. All the systems are internal systems, because they are better than the external resources available to normal businesses according to CoStar There is no culture anymore, what used to be a fun family environment has now turned into a cold, corporate place. People who used to regularly work late because of their dedication to the company and love for it, leave right at 5pm now because they are not valued. Money doesn't buy culture, happiness or a work life balance. Do yourself a favor and look for another great tech company in Chicago to work for. ApartmentFinder folks beware!
