Pros

You will read many reviews about how the people are great. There is no doubt that they are and that they genuinely care for one another. The company takes their customers very seriously and it’s great to see how committed they are. The health benefits are extraordinary. You will not find better health plans around. It’s also what keeps people from leaving for something better.

Cons

The company is unwilling to bend regarding “culture”. Almost all external leadership hires leave (or are asked to) because the culture and the way work gets done is that inflexible. They do not operate internally like other companies do and external hires struggle to figure out how to be successful. There is a strong boy’s club, those judging your performance are highly subjective (as much as they say they’re not), and there is a lack of courage at the leadership level to stop allowing the loudest, most intimidating or most political voice in the room to get their way. Case in point: the nepotism in HR that keeps everyone walking on eggshells and the deception at the very top from 2021. Because the company runs way too lean and won’t change from that, many are overworked. People are really tired and aren’t given the resources and support they need. They have to jump through hoops for it and even then, if it isn’t presented in the right way, you could get eviscerated. And judged mightily for it. Also - to those reading this, there are ways of boosting the ratings on Glassdoor by a company. Lutron is well aware of that.

Pros

Stable company, no lay offs. Mostly good people to work with but, there are some bad employees, but for some reason they get to keep their jobs. If you like to work ten hours in the office then go home and work some more, this is the place for you.

Cons

Interviews are 8 to 8.5 hours long… this is not an exaggeration, they are literally a full day. My initial offer was way too low for someone with 12 years experience doing the job they were interviewing me for. Which was the minimum they could offer me for that job. I did turn them down at first, then they gave me a little better offer. Which, I also wanted to turn down. But, I didn’t have another viable option at the time so I took it thinking that I would just keep looking. Raises even for an “Excellent” reviews are something like 2-3% which would be a joke if it wasn’t your life. New hires are paid more than people who are established in the company since raises don’t keep up with the market. One of Lutron’s 5 Principles is “Take care of the Employee”, that principle is completely ignored by current management. You are a number to them, Plain and simple. Upper and Middle Management is just bad at it’s job. People are kept off balance so they cannot become comfortable at their jobs. There are NO scheduled breaks, even though they are required by law and people usually work through lunch. If you leave at 5 you’re looked down upon and made to feel like a freeloader. No matter how many hours you worked before then. Employees are so inundated with work that they can’t possibly get it done within work hours and need to take their work home. In certain departments you have to spend a quarter of your time protecting yourself to make sure no one can blame you for anything because half of them will kick you under the bus trying to blame their mistakes on you. Lutron is one of the reasons that Unions should be brought back. Their expectations of their employees is ridiculous and they don’t care about the family / work balance. In their opinion, they feel they own you. If you live to work, hate your family, and can suck up with the best of them Lutron is the place for you. Not only would I not recommended Lutron as an employer, I have actively told people to avoid them if they have the option. I would have if I had another option.

Pros

Regardless of your background, you have the opportunity to work in just about any area in the company. Lutron does a good job hiring smart, interesting people. You will make and keep friends here. Others have said that Lutron is a great place to start a career, and I can see why. Entry-level employees actually shoulder more real responsibility than anyone else. Lutron has a (sort-of) no layoff policy, which can be a comfort.

Cons

The company is a cult of personality surrounding the 83-year-old owner. The major driver behind every decision in the company, even at the highest level, is avoidance of his wrath, which is both perpetual and erratic. The company has no strategic vision, no planning, no budgets, no job descriptions, no development plans, no career paths (outside engineering), and people at the highest levels of the company have commented that they have no way of knowing whether or not the company is even profitable. Profits don't seem to be the point. Satisfying the owner's inscrutable, and increasingly unsustainable, vision does. The owner's mercurial style, combined with weak executive leadership and a lack of organizational vision, results in widespread paranoia and cynical politicking. People in positions of power are insecure because it was not merit but submission that got them there. If you're offered a job here, take it if you need to (obviously), but just know going in that the place will mess with your head, and be prepared for that. Lutron is frequently referred to by employees as a "circus," "a joke," and "a social experiment gone wrong."
