Pros

Nothing that makes up for the cons

Cons

Managers and lower employees are packed like sardines in cubicles away from windows, while VPs - mostly older white men, have window offices. It felt like being in a bad episode of Madmen. At the "water cooler" (breakroom) - the VP of one department related a grand experience he had at the British Open when he was privileged to watch 2 tipsy women pole dancing on the 18th hole late at night. All this was related in a hushed tone while he looked furtively around to make sure only the guys could hear him. It was gross, because he is really old. Too bad he is so stupid he didn't see me standing right behind him. Then, his direct report - I complimented him on one of his employees, a woman I'd had a meeting with - and he said, "What did you talk about, clothes?" So, it is a sick, pervasive culture of privilege for the window office boys. They tended to be rude and to act like bulldogs. Outsized egos. Very glad to have gotten out of there and to be working at a successful company with diversity, appreciation, and a lot better ideas about how to do business.

Pros

Management is clueless. They don't realize their competitors offer much better benefit and pay packages. Many think it's still the military and they can talk down to you and demand no work life balance.

Cons

Where to start: Old Boy Network, No promotions, No upward mobility, No raises, no bonuses, more work + responsibilities - less pay with inflation up 40%. They don't care about their employees at all

Pros

All of this relates specifically to working at the North American corporate headquarters in Herndon, VA Depending on your department and position scheduling flexibility is very broad. Telework is common and even encouraged.

Cons

Overall given the competitive job market and number of employment options in Northern Virginia I would personally consider working with Serco to have been somewhat of a career misstep. Even among federal contractors Serco has a tendency to significantly underpay. They will offer you the bare minimum of whatever your market rate may be. The organization as a whole and especially the HR department is poorly organized and constantly in a state of instability. Coming in I was met with a revolving door of coworkers, managers, and even executive leadership and when I eventually left a couple of years later the situation had not improved. Performance feedback is few and far between, often non-existent. Mid-level leadership is uncharismatic, apathetic, and sometimes outright disrespectful to employees and other management teams which reflects poorly on the HR department as a whole. There are major issues with under-staffing throughout the organization which creates high strain and high burnout. For the reasons listed above Serco has a bizarre, loosely formed organizational culture and high-performers tend to take other job opportunities within 2-4 years of working there because current leadership does not seem to value career growth or retaining talent. Despite needing to work closely with each other there is no team atmosphere and people who work there are generally unhappy and frustrated. Serco Group has had a number of extremely high profile and concerning controversies within the last 15 years involving humanitarian issues, insider trading, embezzlement, etc.
