Pros

The pros? There is plenty of work. It doesn't matter if you want production, high end residential, or commercial....it's all there. There are a few people that really care.

Cons

Where do I start? Most management is poor, at best. They will sell you on the 35$ an hour, but there are too many factors, problems, and issues that will preclude you from making that. If you have any experience at all, you'll be on jobs that are challenging, but not make as much money as production jobs. Experience does not pay at Southern Staircase, period. Promises will be made and never fulfilled. There is little room for advancement unless you're part of the "inner circle". I've seen plenty of talented and experienced people leave because there wasn't any room to learn/advance. Southern is great at manipulating numbers and absolutely reprehensible at managing employees.

Pros

Freedom to work at job sites within an hour of Pineville, NC. Work is usually somewhat steady. Company van, large power tools provided.

Cons

Bait and switch employment techniques....work is based on performance, but the jobs are managed so poorly and materials are only available 50% of the time. Your base rate is basically what you make, not the $35/hr advertised. All worked is tracked (I use that word loosely) using pencil and paper. Who isn't digitial in 2017? Lip service is about all you get for your work. You are told you are valuable, but money talks.

Unorganized, chaotic and stressful work experience.

Pros

I was able to use the knowledge and experience I gained during my two plus years to get a substantially better job. The employees can be fun to talk with. Employees are rewarded with a reserved parking spot after ten years of service. The company buys donuts on Friday.

Cons

Not many strong leaders in management. Processes aren't followed properly or are not in place at all, which leads to chaos and fire drills. I felt as though I was being yelled at by coworkers on multiple occasions due to the stress, incomplete information and lack of communication. Mediocre to poor benefits package with little to no participation and no direction or assistance from HR or management. Compensation is decent for a steppingstone job. If you really want to advance your career, I would not recommend staying longer than two years unless you want to be in the stair business for life.
