Pros

I got paid a lot to do very little - kind of the mantra of TVA. Worked with interested people and got to talk to big executives. It was interesting to see how this old company worked and all the things that they working on to improve.

Cons

Very political an lot of negative vibes. People would quit or be fired and management would rarely bring it up. There is so much disfunction because there is very little input from new thinkers. It is all best practices type junk with little consideration of how to cultivate employee engagement and development.

Pros

Human Resources has ample staff and one of the lowest leadership/employee ratios I have ever experienced (for example, one director level position has less than 15 people reporting to them). Resources are plentiful in terms of budget - in fact we were told to think of ways to spend money as there was quite a bit left that we needed to spend. Staff level workers in HR are good and hard working people ... very skilled and just waiting (and hoping) for the chance to one day be fully productive, engaged and appreciated.

Cons

In Human Resources, overall lack of vision, strategy, and a general constant climate of "hair on fire" emergencies. Alignment between the top leaders in HR is minimal which makes getting the right work done very difficult if not impossible. What could be a very good place to work (TVA in general) is ruined by childish Jr. High like behavior of the leadership team of HR. Many excellent people have come and gone from the HR team - and those that disappear do so without even as much as a goodbye or a choked thank you from leadership. Leaving those that remain, disengaged, frustrated, and without much hope for their respective futures.

Pros

Still good benefits for now, fair compensation, diverse workforce.

Cons

Your experience there will vary wildly depending on what organization and work group you find yourself in. I moved around into different organizations within TVA and the common theme was that middle-upper management was clueless and indifferent to the crumbling state of the agency and front line managers found their cries for help falling on deaf ears. The staffing for critical areas has fallen below sustainable levels and if you are one of those left who can halfway do your job expect to work 60-70 hour work weeks under high stress. There is no attrition planning and most of the knowledge quite literally walked away after the last buyout. In five to ten years TVA will not be able to operate unless they improve staffing and training.
