Pros

Unum promotes internal talent development, provides generous employee benefits, steady work environment, strong culture, opportunities to work in many different departments.

Cons

A lot of organizational changes and corporate bureaucracy resulting in deliverables being slowed down by multiple layers of decisionmakers.

Pros

Great work-life balance. I never have to take work home with me and get every single weekend and major holiday off. Scheduled to work on a religious holiday? No problem; they give you 3 floating holidays per year you can apply towards whatever you would like. The pay is above industry standard and includes not only matching 401k contributions, after a year they give you a defined contribution and stock options. The coworkers are great. Everyone from management down is super supportive and peers are eager to lend a helping hand. The expectations are clearly spelled out for you and easily attainable. If you find yourself struggling, the open and inviting culture allows you to not be afraid to ask for the help. I work in office, but we are expanding our contact center more and more to a work at home basis and have gotten some great feedback and results with it. The advancement opportunities are second to none. The contact center is a great way to prove your value, which is why a lot of other departments covet the employees. This is why there is an 18 month commitment in the contact center.

Cons

The work can be trying at times. Mostly the calls are simple status update requests, but you will get the occasional irrationally angry caller that can muddy up your day. That, and it can get a bit boring answering 80-100 calls per day. Due to the sheer amount of calls we take in a day and the limited amount of people that can call out in a day, it can be very difficult to get a day off if you do not request it weeks in advance, but there are often people who will trade shifts with you. If you can't get anyone to trade or cover part of your shift, you may be able to get a schedule adjustment.

Pros

Benefits package. Room for advancement.

Cons

I hate to be the bear of bad news, but if I can save someone from working this position then I will. To begin, don't take any job in a call center.. ever. To say the least, working here was a complete nightmare. Our training class started with 8 and after just 3 short months only one was left standing. The first person who quit said she quit because this job made her sick because of her anxiety. When I heard this, for the first time in my life, I actually understood exactly how she felt ( and I have never felt this way). Ironically, the job pertained to talking to customers who were on short and long term disability. Well, in doing this you must mentally prepare yourself to talk to people who are mentally ill. This job made my life so miserable that there is no amount of money that could ever motivate me to go back. You get no support from the management and you literally have to change your status to go use the restroom, and if you spend more than 30 minutes of your 8 hour day using the restroom or just simply taking a breather from constantly being on the phone, then don't you worry because they WILL bring this to your attention. A co-worker who I grew really close to also had to be put on a medication for how much anxiety this job brought her. I don't think I can count on my fingers and toes just how many break downs this job gave me. So yes, the benefits are the pros for this job but with this type of work you are going to need it for your medication. I can't even blame the management for this. My advice, there are so many other businesses that you will be happier at. If you have a positive, bubbly personality this is going to kill you. My mistake was not quitting this job, my mistake was ever accepting it.
