Much like Black History Month, Women's History Month began as only one week in 1982. After five years of movement in Congress, the week became a full month. The month of March is dedicated to women's contributions to the US throughout history. Did you know that every year, the National Women's History Alliance creates a theme for #WHM? This year's theme is "Celebrating Women Who Tell Our Stories." This means we celebrate women throughout history who have been involved in all forms of media and storytelling. Let's celebrate! #BlackHistorySpotlight: Born in Selma, AL, in 1910, Annie Lee Cooper (Wilkerson) became an advocate and activist for equal voting rights. When she got older, she moved to live with her sister and again to Pennsylvania to work. In 1962, Cooper moved back to Selma to care for her sick mother, and that's when she realized that Black residents in the state still could not vote. The lawmakers in Alabama were comfortable with keeping the laws the same so that the people in high-powered positions could stay in those positions. After discovering this information and being introduced to organizations like Student Non-Violent Coordinating Committee (SNCC) and the Dallas County Voter's League, she was ready to begin activism in her hometown. In 1965, Cooper became widely known for an incident when she was in line for voter registration with a police officer known for brutally beating citizens trying to vote. Mrs. Cooper was arrested but was shortly released after this officer threatened to injure her even more. This incident was one of many that sparked the passing of the Voting Rights Act of 1
