#BlackHistorySpotlight: Writing about his experience as a Black man in America, James Baldwin, a well-known author and activist, published many works dedicated to sharing the story of his plight. Baldwin was born in Harlem in 1924 and began to explore writing when he was just 14, but his real job at this age was preaching. He followed his father's footsteps during his teen years but was further inspired to write due to the influential language of the church. Baldwin's first novel, Go Tell It On The Mountain, was published in 1953, and it was an autobiographical story of growing up as a Black man in Harlem, New York. This novel became popular due to the passion with which he described the struggles he endured because of his blackness. He went on to write several widely known novels, including If Beale Street Could Talk. He also moved from the states to Paris and Istanbul but returned to be a part of the civil rights, and he was close friends with Malcolm X, Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, and Medgar Evers. #WeArePeabody #BlackHistoryMonth
#BlackHistorySpotlight: Kentaji Brown Jackson is the first Black Woman to serve on the Supreme Court. She made history in 2022 when President Joe Biden nominated her, almost ten years after President Barack Obama originally nominated her. Jackson was born September 14, 1970, in Washington, D.C. and grew up in Miami, FL. Her father was a lawyer, and her mother was a school principal. She eventually went to Harvard University to study government, and she began her journalism career until she entered Harvard Law School. Since becoming a lawyer, Jackson spent time working in prestigious clerkships, working to reduce sentences for certain crimes, and was involved in many high-profile court cases. #WeArePeabody #BlackHistoryMonth
#BlackHistorySpotlight: Born February 27, 1876, in Westfield, MA, Philip A. Payton is forever known as the "Father of Harlem." Payton provided African Americans with quality housing in New York City. He became a real estate broker, a property manager, and the owner of Afro-American Realty Company. The premise behind his company was to rent 5-year leases for apartment buildings and other housing forms in an unwelcoming area for Black residents at the time. He would then rent these properties to African Americans who were new to the city due to migration from the south. Of course, there were many obstacles, but by the time he passed in 1917, African American businesses and residents occupied a substantial area of Harlem. About three years later, the Harlem Renaissance began. #WeArePeabody #BlackHistoryMonth #PhilipAPayton
#BlackHistorySpotlight: Frederick Douglass, born in 1818, began as an enslaved man. He was a man who taught himself to read and write, then taught others the same using the Bible. In 1838, after multiple attempts, Douglass successfully escaped to the free state of New York. Eventually, he moved to New Bedford, MA, where he became a notable author and abolitionist. He also became a widely known orator and statesman. Douglass became an advisor to President Abraham Lincoln; he was the person who convinced Lincoln to prioritize abolition. #WeArePeabody #BlackHistoryMonth
#BlackHistorySpotlight: Throughout the month, we will highlight notable Black figures in honor of Black History Month. Today, we get to start off with America's first Black woman millionaire! Born in 1867 as Sarah Breedlove, Madam C.J. Walker was an entrepreneur and philanthropist who gained her fortune by creating homemade hair products initially designed to help her own hair loss. She went on to open a beauty school and factory and developed programs to allow her employees to give back to their communities. She also utilized her fortune to fund scholarships at Tuskegee Institute and donated a considerable amount to organizations such as the NAACP and The Black YMCA. We honor and appreciate the inspiration of Madam C.J. Walker! #WeArePeabody #BlackHistoryMonth

#DidYouKnow: Black History Month originally began as a week in 1926? Started by famous author and historian Carter G. Woodson, this was celebrated the second week of February to commemorate the birthdays of President Abraham Lincoln and Frederick Douglass. It wasn't until 1976 that the week was extended to an entire month celebrating African-Americans' contributions.
