(Continued from previous post...) “Camp is so important. The kids get to be the people who are in the spotlight – but not for not being normal,” she said. “Everyone there is checking blood sugars, everybody’s counting carbs, everyone’s getting a finger stick, so they become the normal kid.” In 2014, Traci and a group of friends created the South Carolina Youth Diabetes Association. And she created the Sweet Science Conference in 2017, which is open to school nurses in South Carolina, North Carolina and Georgia to earn continuing education hours while getting hands-on experience with diabetes technology and learning from endocrinologists, dietitians and behavioral care professionals. “You have to put in the time and the attention to make sure your child is doing what they’re supposed to do and if they’re not, figure out why so we can fix it. “And for the kids, I want to remind them that their blood sugar isn’t good or bad, it’s a number, and we want as many normal numbers as we can get.” We’re glad to have Traci a part of the Prisma Health team. #PrismaHealthProud
When Traci Scott, RN, was a young nurse at Richland Hospital, she admits that she was “scared to death of caring for patients with diabetes” because of the complexity of their medical needs. When her own son, Matthew, was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes in 2005, she said she laughed at God’s sense of humor. Since then, Traci has become a veritable expert on diabetes care, and she has worked tirelessly to help children with diabetes, parents of those children and adults who are struggling with the disease. “The people I was scared to take care of are now my favorite people. But it was a huge learning curve for me,” she said. “When Matthew was diagnosed, people would say, ‘Oh, you’re a nurse, you’re gonna do so well,’ but I felt like I didn’t know anything.” That would change. Dramatically. Her work isn’t confined by the walls of the hospital. Traci became a school nurse and brought diabetes awareness to her community by establishing “Dia-Family Night” for parents to hear speakers, talk with a dietitian and learn about available resources. She became a certified diabetes care and education specialist (CDCES). She attended Camp Adam Fisher, a local weeklong camp for kids with diabetes, to learn how it operated, and to offer the camp experience to even more kids, Traci and a few other health care professionals established Camp Sweet Escape in 2014.
