Laurens County Hospital team members were all in when asked if they would mentor a group of young interns with learning disabilities. Students from Laurens County School District 55 started working at the hospital in September, part of a national program called Project SEARCH, which exposes non-diploma students to the work environment and allows them to develop job skills to help them succeed after they leave school. Justin M. Benfield, the CEO for Laurens County Hospital, called the project “a great way for us to engage with our community and invest in our future workforce.” “There was an overwhelming interest to participate based on the mission and purpose of Project SEARCH,” he said. “It gives students the chance to learn and succeed and be part of a team … to find purpose. For us to be a part of something so special – you know you’re doing the right thing.” For one school year, 18- to 21-year-olds with intellectual and developmental disabilities will work with an instructor and two skills trainers as they rotate through three unpaid internship to gain transferrable job skills.
“We know that patients and families benefit when nurses earn national certification in their area of specialty,” said Senior Vice President and Chief Nursing Executive Jean Meyer. “We celebrate our certified nurses in March each year for National Certified Nurses Day on March 19, applauding their demonstration of professionalism, knowledge, skills and contribution to the exemplary care we deliver at Prisma Health.” National certifications in clinical nursing are voluntary, but at Prisma Health, nurses are encouraged to earn and maintain certification because going above the South Carolina licensing standards affirms their dedication to quality care, mentorship of new nurses and developing new practice standards for their specialty. Certified nurses are required to maintain the designation through ongoing learning and practice requirements to stay up to date on the latest in technology, research, and nursing practice. More than 1,000 Prisma Health nurses have national specialty certifications.
Dalton Shull is the newest member of the crew and has been laying the groundwork for the program in the Midlands, including in-house training and shadowing, planning the certification class, purchasing equipment and building relationships with community partners who may be able to help meet the non-medical needs of our patients. Dalton celebrated his 30th anniversary with EMS in January. He worked for a county 911 service for over 27 years and then joined Prisma Health’s Critical Care Transport team. Community paramedicine is a combination of clinical medical skills and social work, he said, “with a big dose of a passion for longer-term care.” He explained: “You need to be clinically competent to understand the short- and long-term effects of multiple disease processes, but also able to look at how living conditions affect both the physical and mental health of the patients and understand what resources we can call on to meet their needs.”
