Schnitzer Steel’s annual Earth Day celebrations are only one example of how our business is rooted in the concepts of sustainability. Over the past two weeks, we have had more than 80 facilities and 1,300 employees participate in celebrations which included cleanups of local parks, beaches, and trails; invasive plant cutbacks; scrap drives with local school districts; customer appreciation days; tree planting; and recycling education booths. A few highlights include: • Portland, OR facilities partnered with SOLVE Oregon to clean up a downtown area including clearing invasive, non-native plants. • Providence & Warwick, RI facilities joined the local City Parks Department to clean-up trash and debris at Roger Williams Park. • Cascade Steel partnered with the greater Yamhill Watershed Council in the removal of invasive ivy. • Pick-n-Pull stores held their annual “Earth Day, Every Day, REuse REcycle” campaign which focuses on educating customers on the benefits of reducing waste through reuse and recycling efforts.
