We are proud to announce that Schnitzer Steel is a founding member of the Second Chance Business Coalition (SCBC). This group of like-minded large employers is joining together to provide employment and advancement opportunities to job candidates with a criminal record. Given that nearly one out of every three adult Americans has a record, we are committed to developing and advancing a program which gives them pathways to opportunity. Research shows that individuals with a conviction history often experience significant collateral consequences as a result, including barriers to employment and professional advancement. A criminal record alone can reduce the chances of a second interview by 50%. But a Society for Human Resource Management study found that 82% of managers feel the “quality of hire” for workers with criminal records is as high as or higher than that for workers without records. The SCBC will help change the conversation around second chance employment. Look for more on our work in this area, and stay tuned for more from the SCBC and our fellow member companies.
