Women's History Month - Employee Spotlight Marie Vue has been a Regional Dispatcher for almost two years and contributes greatly to the success of her region. Her area of responsibility consists of dispatching transportation into our three metals recycling yards and transportation out from our 22 Pick-n-Pull stores. Marie has earned much respect from her colleagues she interacts with daily within and outside of Schnitzer Steel. When asked what advice Marie has for her fellow women working at Schnitzer or looking to join Schnitzer, she replied: "Always be thorough in what you do and be the person people look up to. Don't stop learning and be yourself! I believe the skills most critical to success at Schnitzer and in manufacturing are effectiveness and leadership. Leadership is always an important skill to have everywhere you go. You must know how to work independently and also as a team. It is also very important that the decisions presented are effective solutions in moving the company forward."
Today marks the 110th observance of International Women’s Day, observed for the first time in Austria, Denmark, Germany, and Switzerland in March 1911. We have come a long way since the first International Women’s Day. In the United States and Canada, a number of laws and regulations have been passed to solidify women’s rights, such as: - The ratification of the 19th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution, ensuring a woman’s right to vote in 1920 - The U.S. Civil Rights Act of 1964 - Title IX of the Education Amendments Act of 1972 - The Canadian Human Rights Act of 1977 As we think about today and what it signifies, think about how you can participate to help bring not just equality, but equity to our community.

Carlyle Brown – Sales Supervisor, Fort Worth, TX "Diversity is a valuable & resourceful advantage accomplished by bringing together people from various backgrounds to equally share & contribute their ideas, perspectives, & beliefs for the gain of the company who chooses to apply it. It is a fundamental asset & advantage a company possesses & applies to be ethnically, culturally, & gender diverse. Inclusion is the action of taking full opportunistic advantage of the diversity. By utilizing the tools, resources, background knowledge, ideas, & considering the opinions & thoughts of others, we are able to open our minds & eyes to bring forth a never-ending brainstorm of new methods of operation, as well as keep a competitive edge in our industry. PNP has always had, & continues to maintain a positive & open approach to culture & diversity. Not only is it connected deeply with the company’s core values, it is kept at the forefront of our message & a huge part of our footprint in the commercial industry. Everyone knows our standing position on the matter, & we are proud to tell everyone!"

Black History Month - Employee Spotlight "Inclusion means I am treated like everyone else, my opinion is taken into consideration while we are planning ahead for a job and also while figuring out the best way to complete a job when we run into an issue. Diversity means that here in Everett, I get to work with people from all walks of life, it is a melting pot. In my opinion the culture here has not changed much at all. Throughout my 10 years of employment here I have always felt included and respected. I feel lucky to have worked at a yard where I have always been treated as an equal and that is immune to the racial divide you see elsewhere in our world today. Diversity brings different mindsets, different upbringings and different experiences together, which allows us to come up with different solutions to tasks which could be overlooked in an environment without diversity. Diversity is being open minded, and with being open minded comes the ability overcome hardships more easily than an environment without diversity." Joseph Coombs - Maintenance Technician in Everett, MA
Black History Month - Employee Spotlight "Diversity and inclusion means to me: A diverse workplace or community where everyone is welcome and made to feel included regardless of race or sex. An environment where people can be themselves to achieve their dreams. Since I have joined Pick-n-Pull, a division of Schnitzer Steel Industries a little over 2 years ago, I have seen the company ramp up their commitment to our diversity and inclusion culture. When we have our CEO and leadership team getting behind making changes, it's a great feeling! This is being demonstrated through our ERG’s and other focus groups, which shows why this is a great place to work!" Greg Fluellyn - Recycling Director for the Pick-n-Pull Central Region
Black History Month - Employee Spotlight "Diversity and inclusion means to me that people who look like me and people like me have the opportunity to grow, be a part of and make up the culture here at Schnitzer. In my short time here, I really appreciate how with all that’s going on in the present, Schnitzer saw a need and put action behind words. Diversity is very important to me. The true value is appreciating all elements which make us each unique." Tamika Wright - Logistics Coordinator, National Accounts Products & Services
Black History Month - Employee Spotlight "Diversity is people coming together from different backgrounds and skillsets, not just necessarily a racial background. Inclusion means being part of a structured group in one environment/community which includes all people who bring their different and unique skillsets/assets to the workplace and work cohesively together. Since my joining Schnitzer two years ago and this past years COVID situation and events, I have noticed some significant changes in how our company addresses social and racial injustices by creating sensitive talking points and employee resource groups to help educate, reform and create awareness of todays climate. In particular, I was quite proud when our CEO spoke out directly against social and racial injustices which have been occurring over the last year in recent town hall meetings. It was addressed immediately, swiftly and heartfelt. It was not contrived or a cookie cutter response." Erie Reed - Security Specialist
Black History Month - Employee Spotlight "When I contemplate diversity & inclusion, I think about how I personally can engage with each person on our team, so we together can be successful. As long as we respect one another & try to understand each other, we can find a way to solve the problems facing us, both as an organization & as a community. I really enjoy working with the diverse group we have at Schnitzer. We are NOT all the same – & that is the greatest thing ever! The power of our company (& of America) is we are the melting pot of many different races, colors, backgrounds & nationalities – & with that diversity, comes a huge pool of top talent, skillsets, diverse perspectives & new ideas, which I believe, is to our advantage to solve any challenge put in front of us. I have seen where Schnitzer has taken on that mantra & demonstrated diversity & inclusion through the support & implementation of 6 employee resource groups & aligning our strategic goals to reflect diverse representation supporting the One Schnitzer model." Judodine Nichols - Vice President, Innovation
