Black History Month - Employee Spotlight "To me diversity and inclusion are extremely important in all professions. Inclusion is the action or state of being included within a group and diversity is including or involving people from different backgrounds. These two things go hand and hand. I have been an employee at Pick-n-Pull, a division of Schnitzer Steel Industries nine years and running. I must say that the company has become more diverse over the years as we continue to make all feel welcome. Always embrace diversity and inclusion!" John Bovan is a Production Team Member at our Pick-n-Pull Hammond, IN location.
Black History Month - Employee Spotlight "Diversity to me means that it’s important to be respectful and courteous to everyone's views and ideas because, at our core, I believe everyone has similar needs and wants. Our culture here at Pick-n-Pull is like our second family. I can talk to anyone because of my personality, but I believe everyone is approachable from the CEO to the newest employee." Jermaine Bomar is a Forklift Operator at our Pick-n-Pull Kansas City Truman location.
Black History Month - Employee Spotlight “Simply put, diversity means representation and inclusion means putting value on that representation. Representation absolutely matters, however it becomes null & void if people here look like me, but our experiences are unequal to our peers, our opinions are devalued, or our contributions disregarded. Fair treatment and respect are key. It’s not enough to just be here, it’s important to feel valued and heard. Here at Pick-n-Pull, a division of Schnitzer Steel Industries, the diversity is clearly evident, but the attention paid to the inclusion part speaks volumes. I’m proud to work for a company that embraces diversity and inclusion as a cultural component of its philosophy.” Harold Young is a Loader Operator at our Pick-n-Pull Columbus, OH store.
Black History Month - Employee Spotlight “Diversity to me means I can come to work and see people who come from where I come from and who understand what it’s like to walk in my shoes. I think it’s great to now have the opportunity to have open conversations about diversity and inclusion, to ask us front line workers what it looks like out here and how we can make it better. Diversity in the workplace is very important. The value it brings to me is being able to walk around and see and interact with people who look like me – it makes me feel more comfortable.” Darell Smith is a Driver at our Adamson metals yard in Georgia.
February 1st begins the annual observance of Black History Month, which is celebrated in the United States and Canada. Black History month is an annual celebration recognizing the integral roles Black people have played in history. We will be celebrating Black History Month at Schnitzer Steel through several exciting activities developed and facilitated by our RISE (Racial Inclusiveness, Support and Education) Employee Resource Group. We approach diversity and inclusion as we approach many other strategic business imperatives: we begin at the top with the focus and strong support of our leadership team. Fundamental to our success for the next one hundred years is a renewed commitment to fostering an environment which attracts a diverse workforce and promotes a culture of inclusiveness.
At Schnitzer Steel we recycle TONS of metal - ferrous and non-ferrous - as well as TONS of other materials such as rubber in the form of tires. Fun fact: 15% of the material in a tire is "steel wire" and 85% is the rubber and fibers. This material is capable of being recovered and recycled for re-use into a wide variety of products, like flooring and mulch for playgrounds, landscapes, and athletic fields; construction materials for roads and civil engineering projects; and even lower-carbon fuels relative to traditional fossil fuels. At our metal collection yards and auto dismantling stores, our recycling and dismantling services recover, recirculate, and recycle millions of tires annually.
We are pleased to share that Oregon Food Bank has chosen to recognize Schnitzer Steel in their Volunteer Action Center (VAC). In gratitude for our support, Oregon Food Bank will feature our company logo in a yearlong display at both the Portland and Beaverton locations, seen by thousands of volunteers. This recognition honors companies who participated in at least 3 of the 4 following ways in FY19-20: • Volunteerism • Corporate donation • Corporate-influenced donations (such as fund drives and workplace giving) • Product donation Our partnership with Oregon Food Bank allows them to effectively address the challenges our community faces: COVID-19, economic devastation, racial injustice, wildfires, and a spike in food insecurity throughout Oregon and Clark County, Washington. Working together, we can eliminate hunger and its root causes…because no one should be hungry!
Our Schnitzer-wide food drive has wrapped and we are excited to announce that over $150,000 in donations have been gathered! Our employees also volunteered in their local communities, donating over 60 hours of their time.
A message from our Chairman, President and Chief Executive Officer, Tamara Lundgren: "I want to take a moment to share my perspective about the violent events that unfolded at the Capitol yesterday. The United States serves as a beacon of democracy around the world. What happened yesterday were destructive acts against our cherished democratic principle of a peaceful transition of power. It is time for us to move forward as one nation, peacefully and respectfully, and to rebuild our country as we recover from the devastating impacts of the pandemic. As we begin a new year, let’s commit to finding common ground on the issues that divide us and unite behind the shared values on which our democracy was founded. "
