VETERAN EMPLOYEE SPOTLIGHT - David Kinkade "Military service not only provided a means to pursue higher education, but also the drive and focus required to succeed professionally. Ultimately it helped me refine what I wanted out of life and gave me the tools to get there. Through technical training schools and every day challenges, the military taught me to always seek out new opportunities and to be comfortable in new or ambiguous situations. This soft skill has proven foundational in my personal life, career and here at Schnitzer Steel."
VETERAN EMPLOYEE SPOTLIGHT - Alex Dombrowski I enlisted in the US Navy in 1987 during my senior year in High School. I served on 2 US Navy ships both forward deployed to Japan. I was ships company on the USS Blue Ridge (LCC-19) from Feb 1988 – Mar 1991 and the USS Bunker Hill (GC-52) from Apr 1991 – Jan 1995. In 1995 I transferred to instructor duty at NRC Everett, WA and then left active duty for reserve duty in 1998. During my time in the Naval Reserve I was assigned to an IT Training unit (SPAWAR) and spent my reserve years training Fleet IT personnel. In 2002 I was selected and promoted to the rank of Chief Petty Officer (E-7). I retired with 24 years total service (12 Active/12 Reserve) in Sep 2011. I served during the Operations Desert Storm/Desert Shield from Aug 1990 – Mar 1991 and the Iraq war from Jan 2010 – Dec 2010. The skills I learned in the US Navy which have helped me in my career at Schnitzer are training and mentoring, leadership, delegation and my IT skills. In the military we are taught to train our replacements and I work toward that in civilian career.

Today we honor veterans across our country, including those working at Schnitzer Steel.
VETERAN EMPLOYEE SPOTLIGHT - Tony Belot In 2003, I deployed to the Middle East with 1st Recon Bn., 1st Marine Division, as a non-commissioned officer, becoming one of the first boots on the ground in the Invasion of Iraq, under General James Mattis. My unit acted as the tip of the spear, charging into Baghdad in Humvees and other light vehicles, and ultimately led to toppling the regime. In 2004, I deployed once again to fight in Fallujah, which is regarded as one of the most intense battles of the Global War on Terrorism. Without a doubt soft skills such as working as a team, sometimes with incomplete information, to relentlessly accomplish a mission has been a critical attribute I honed while in the military. My position is responsible for developing and executing legislative and advocacy initiatives across the Northwest. Often, this means leading horizontally through coalition building across multiple business sectors to speak as a unified voice. There really isn’t a day that goes by where I’m not using skills I developed in the military in my role at Schnitzer Steel.
