Revitalizing Main Street with our Non-Profit Partners Main Streets across America are hurting. Stay-at-home orders due to the COVID-19 pandemic forced many of them to close their doors for weeks or even months. And just as they began to reopen, protests and curfews have led to damage and additional closures. Republic Services believes small businesses are the cornerstone of strong and vibrant neighborhoods. That?s why we?re partnering with three national nonprofit organizations to help during these unprecedented and challenging times. Through our Committed to Serve initiative, Republic Services is joining long standing partners Rebuilding Together, Habitat for Humanity International and NeighborWorks America in a $3-million effort to help small businesses not only survive but thrive.
Spreading cheer to healthcare workers, young patients The COVID-19 pandemic has been a difficult time for all of us but imagine being a child who needs to be hospitalized, or a healthcare worker putting in long hours for weeks on end. To spread some cheer and say thank you, the Republic Services Charitable Foundation sponsored the delivery of nearly 700 care packages to hospital workers and pediatric patients in Atlanta, Boston, Phoenix, Seattle and St. Louis. The care packages for ?Hospital Heroes? were provided to seven hospitals through a partnership with Cheeriodicals, which assembled the gifts and arranged delivery. Republic Services is the first corporate sponsor to provide care packages to both healthcare workers and pediatric patients during the COVID-19 crisis.

Designing a Garbage Truck of the Future (Part 2) February 27, 2020 We partnered with USC and ASU MBA students and students in ASU’s industrial design school. The students’ ideas needed to address specific real-world challenges. Does it drive efficiency? Is it safe? How can it improve the trash collection process? Questions to think about when designing the truck of the future. The results were impressive. From self-driving trucks to advanced safety features allowing drivers to maneuver in tight spaces, the students delivered thought-provoking designs and business plans. The projects brought the power of industrial design together with real-world business challenges. It gave the students a glimpse into how the design and business process works in a unique industry and created a strong relationship for Republic with two of the best schools in the country. While the concepts aren’t feasible to put into production just yet, it was an exciting opportunity to work with the students and see their innovative ideas. Our future is bright!
Designing a Garbage Truck of the Future (Part 1) February 27, 2020 There are multiple paths to innovation, especially when it comes to technology. At Republic, our vision is to be America’s preferred waste and recycling partner – and to do this, innovation is not a nice-to-have – it’s a must. With a fleet of 16,000 trucks, we partner with leading manufacturers on innovation. We also know that when it comes to designing a garbage truck of the future, it can be beneficial to learn from those who aren’t close to the waste and recycling industry - people who can think differently about our business and what we do. Enter Arizona State University (ASU) and the University of Southern California (USC), two of the country’s top MBA programs and leaders in the innovation space.
Resolve to be a Better Recycler in 2020 January 02, 2020 Most New Year’s resolutions can be daunting, but resolving to be a better recycler is easy! We all start somewhere, and whether you’re brand new or an on-and-off recycler, these tips will help you make recycling a simple habit all year. 1. Know what to throw. Focus on cardboard, paper, aluminum cans, plastic bottles to make the most impact. 2. Empty, clean and dry. These are the three magic words of recycling. 3. When in doubt, throw it out. There are times you just aren’t sure if something should be recycled or not. It’s best to toss the item in the waste bin when that happens. 4. Don’t bag it. While it might seem to make sense to place recyclables in a plastic bag, it’s a big no-no. And that plastic bag isn’t recyclable via your curbside program. (But most grocery stores have plastic bag collection bins near the entrance.) Follow these tips and you can happily check off one of the resolutions on your list. 2019 National Neighborhood Promise Year in Review: 23 Projects, $2 Million in Grants November 25, 2019 It’s been said that charity starts at home, and for Republic Services, that means helping make a difference in the neighborhoods where our employees live and work. In 2018 we launched a charitable giving program to help transform neighborhoods across the nation. Since that time, we’ve donated more than $2 million to support 23 neighborhood revitalization projects. Through the National Neighborhood Promise program, the Republic Services Charitable Foundation partners with select 501(c)(3) nonprofit organizations to directly support neighborhood revitalization projects and programs across the country. These partnerships strengthen neighborhoods by rebuilding, revitalizing and restoring public places and spaces such as parks, playgrounds and other vital community landmarks. Hiring Our Heroes (Part 2) November 11, 2019 While hiring our nation’s heroes provides great value, we also know that retaining them is just as important. To help with this, we provide specialized training to assist in a successful transition from military service to a career at Republic, and we also proudly partner with several organizations to recruit and retain veterans and active military service members. Our employees are the foundation of everything that makes our company great. They make Republic Services a preferred place to work and help our communities to be strong and vibrant.
