September is back to school month in more ways than one. See how and why United Ways across the U.S. are participating in Attendance Awareness Month. Our goal is to raise awareness of the effects of chronic absence on a child’s ability to succeed in school. http://glassdoor.com/slink.htm?key=vI8rQ

On the 10 year anniversary of Hurricane Katrina, the United Way of Southeast Louisiana and all United Ways look back proudly on their efforts in the first days of recovery and over the ensuing 10 years. Like so many UWs, The United Way of the Bay Area partners with other poverty-fighting organizations to deliver free tax preparation services to those with limited means. Because many people don't know about the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC), volunteer tax preparers work hard to see if clients are eligible for this refundable credit--it can total $6,143 for a family of 4. What a difference that can make to a household that is struggling to make ends meet! Good News: California recently joined 25 other states in sponsoring its own EITC. http://glassdoor.com/slink.htm?key=vITn2
The United Way of Greater Milwaukee and Waukesha County is only one of the United Ways across the country that sponsor a school backpack drive each year. Pencils, pens, markers, notebooks, and the backpack itself are expenses that some families simply can't afford. In Waukesha County, WI alone, 22,000 people live under the poverty line and the $60 cost of a backpack and supplies is beyond their reach. Tragically, that situation is mirrored in counties across the country--even in high income areas like San Francisco and Silicon Valley. http://glassdoor.com/slink.htm?key=vIKht
The United Way of Greater Kansas City teamed up with the Salvation Army to enable a disabled veteran to stay in his home of 37 years. Through its free twenty-four hour 211 referral service, UWGC provides a full time veterans navigator, a veteran himself, who works one-on-one with veterans who call in seeking resources or help with housing, employment, health issues, and support. Thanks to this specialized attention, one Vietnam era soldier is sleeping a little easier tonight. http://glassdoor.com/slink.htm?key=vIKMK
