Central to our mission is the maxim, "Live United"--so we couldn't be more proud that United Way Wine Country CEO, Mike Kallhoff was honored with a U.S. Senate resolution honoring him for the ongoing work he and UWWC are doing to assist survivors of the October fires. Our hats are off to Mike. He's a great example of walking the talk! http://glassdoor.com/slink.htm?key=vQ7Mn
Tax time...for people living in and around Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, the 457 trained volunteers who spend 22,000 hours preparing tax returns for free, the United Way of Southwestern Pennsylvania is a life line. The free tax prep service is a national effort. In Pittsburgh and surrounding communities, ten thousand people benefited from the expert services they received thanks to their local United Way. http://glassdoor.com/slink.htm?key=vQ7ns
Listen to Markus tell his story. Take a moment to understand how much of a difference the United Way of Metropolitan Dallas and Achieve made in his life. Once you do, you'll understand why we look forward to coming to work each day. http://glassdoor.com/slink.htm?key=vQUhe
One of the things that is most remarkable about my United Way network colleagues is how talented they are--both in their professional lives and in their "other" lives. It makes coming to work such an enriching experience! Among our staff, we count epicurian cooks, county fair prize winners, airplane pilots, writers, dancers, marathon runners, comedians, and musicians--to name a few. On December 30, the Executive Vice President and COO of United Way Bay Area was invited by the Golden State Warriors to sing the Star Spangled Banner at the opening of their sold-out game. He brought the house down! Take a minute to listen. You'll be glad you did. http://glassdoor.com/slink.htm?key=vQ2hO
In a December 22nd New York Times Wealth Matters column, Paul Sullivan posed a question about how giving in the aftermath of a disaster (which is generally targeted at immediate needs like food, shelter, and clothing) can be pivoted to sustain long term, systemic change. At the United Way, we are always asking that question. Core to our mission is balancing immediate needs and systemic change. http://glassdoor.com/slink.htm?key=vQ26V
The range of musicians who reach out to help United Ways across the United States is breathtaking--Death Angel, Beyonce, Lady Gaga, and Ronnie Milsap to name a few. In Tennessee, Ronnie is campaigning along with United Ways of Tennessee--a collaboration of 37 local UWs -- to recruit volunteers to read to, tutor, and mentor children and youth. So far, 20,000 volunteers have raised their hand to help children across the state to improve their reading and math scores. http://glassdoor.com/slink.htm?key=vQ26w
Listen to Eric Harrison, President & CEO at United Way of Ventura County. As he says, "This is hope for people that have been completely devastated.” http://glassdoor.com/slink.htm?key=vQLIG
United Way Worldwide has joined the Council on Foundations in opposing the tax bills currently moving through Congress. We are concerned that 31 million of the people who currently itemize charitable deductions on their tax return will no longer be able to do so and, as a result, will reduce their donations. That will be disastrous for the 61 million people we serve throughout the country and the world. http://glassdoor.com/slink.htm?key=vQDhV
What makes working at United Way different? Read this update from a staff member at United Way Wine Country about what it's like to help with wildfire relief and I think you'll see...http://glassdoor.com/slink.htm?key=vQu26
Six out of ten kids aren’t reading on grade-level by third grade in NYC. Kids who miss this milestone are 74% more likely to drop out of high school, leading to a lifetime of struggle and poverty. Using a collaborative impact approach, United Way New York City is working with partners to make a difference in neighborhoods like Mott Haven. http://glassdoor.com/slink.htm?key=vQHWN
