"Live United" isn't just a catch phrase for us; it's a way of life. One of our United Way Bay Area colleagues lost her home and everything in it on Monday morning in the Napa/Sonoma wildfires. Even as we sprang into action to partner with local organizations on aid for the community, we took a moment to care for our own. In 18 hours, staff and alumni raised 70% of the goal we'd set ourselves to help our friend. ...We'd also put up our fire relief donations page, done outreach to be sure our United Way Wine Country friends were safe, and begun to organize our volunteer efforts.
Hurricane Maria devastated Puerto Rico and the American Virgin Islands. As with Irma and Harvey, the United Way is gearing up to help with recovery. Heart of Florida United Way is leading the way.
Houston may be moving out the the news as Hurricane Maria barrels towards Puerto Rico, but the recovery is just beginning. United Way of Greater Houston pledges that 100% of monies raised by their Relief Fund will be used to help individuals and families with immediate, basic needs as well as long-term recovery needs and services.
Hats of to United Way of Greater Knoxville for sponsoring the coolest on-line auction ever! Want to bid on a tiny house that you can tow anywhere? If so, bids start at $10,000. Want to see pictures? Click here: http://glassdoor.com/slink.htm?key=vQ0td
United Way is always there--whether you need 24/7 multi-language referrals to services to meet basic needs (call 211), ongoing help building financial stability for your family, or assistance to rebuild your life after a natural catastrophe.
Our volunteers are fully engaged..sometimes so much so that they leave their "day jobs" so as to make the local United Way their day job. Raising $40 million to invest in the local community each year is a huge job, but Ms. Alonso is a match for it. The 200 + staff of UW Miami-Dade is very lucky to have her as their new leader. Congratulations, Maria!

Stories like Connie's are one of the reasons we do what we do. Thanks to United Way, Metropolitan Dallas for sharing this triumphant journey from despair to success.
Latasha Causey chairs the Women United Steering Committee at Valley of the Sun United Way in Phoenix. She offers a compelling model in answer to the question, "How do you get a young person excited about volunteering? "
United Ways are blessed to have enthusiastic corporate partners. Take a look at this Despicable Me video clip to see one way companies like NBC Bay Area support a backpack drive designed to stuff 50,000 back-to-school backpacks.
