If you can survive 30 years of their crap you will be rewarded with an excellent retirement package. The only down side is that the majority of retirees die less than 5 years after retirement. Anyone who works as a trainmster for 30 years will not be healthy or sane when they finally retire so death isnt that far off.

Railroad retirement is an awesome retirement. RR Tiered taxes are higher than SSN but pay off when you retire.
