Couple of times JCI has organized charitable auctions. The way it worked: employees brought to the company items to donate and then the items were sold on an internal company auction. The collected amounts from the auction were typically ~USD 2000 - 2500. Then the company matched the total income, thus rising the money up to ~USD 4000 - 5000 and then helped families in need. Typically the exact amounts of help were distributed in email to all employees, so that everybody was aware where the money went. I remember once helping three families 1) the kinds who's mum passed away just before the Christmas holidays, 2) children of some colleague who's spouse was in jail, 3) support of grand parents who rose up orphan kids.
