I was diagnosed with stage 4 cancer and treatments included chemo, surgery and radiation. I also would have to remain in treatment forever.
Flying for short term disability was a breeze, but as LTD was different. I had to appeal to get initial approval, and then 13 months later they decided I was no longer disabled with explanation. The stopped payments abruptly with no warning and then said they had 45 days in which I was not paid to review my case.
If a disability company isn’t going to cover someone with stage 4 cancer I don’t know what the point of the product is. Their actions are unexceptable.

I disagree in the wait time. I had to wait one week. I had to take my vacation, and my sick pay.
(Not a big deal TRUST ME )! I would hate to think what would happen if I did not choose the short term, and long term disability when I was hired over year and half ago .
I always thought that because I’m still young 40-ish that I wouldn’t need short term , or long term disability I was wrong! I’m happy I listened to my dads advice.
They are very nice people, and genuinely seem to care.
My concern was with my employer from week two I had my management team and Associates texting, and calling my personal cell, as well as work cell to tell me rumor had it I was never coming back, and that my boss was discussing my health, and he was the one telling them I wouldn’t be back. ( I never told my boss anything about my health we go through HR so for him to do such a thing is illegal, and immoral .
My concern is if they do terminate my position after FMLA runs out am I still covered through Cobra?
A very important piece of this is the units I took over hadn’t had a Multi ~ Unit Operations Manager over them for over two years when I took over.
So it’ll be interesting to see what happens due to the specialist,
I have had to, and am still going through the referral process for each new test, or Specialist.
I understand that it’s a good thing to be referred to a Specialist that is very busy, your health IS everything.
Just to get an MRI, it literally is taking 2 to 3 weeks even a month for them to schedule you to the referral and that’s the specialist office.
So before you know it you’re three months in and you’re still in pain, you won’t be released due to them being afraid of further damage.
You’ve tried a couple different procedures, that haven’t worked, ultimately surgery will probably be in the future but your employer is already telling your management team who you are technically in charge of, that you’re not coming back, and that you’re being terminated.
Anyway I wanted to make sure people understand it’s imperative to have long-term, and short-term disability regardless of age.
My sister-in-law is a writer and lives in Manhattan after this whole fiasco is over she’s going to do an article on what happened to me.
If it helps one person not have to deal with what I did, I will be happy.

Their short term disability is TOP RATE. You get 100% on your first day. You don't have to wait a certain amount of days or spend any PTO before you get disability. You can pay to get extra on the long term disability. But the disability department needs to work more closely with the payroll department.

They offered a generous disability insurance program for the employees.
