Twice annually, the company makes the ESPP buy at 10% less than the lower of the two dates bracketing the purchase period. These dates generally fall at the stock's peak price points, though, a week or so before the earnings call that tanks the stock price like clockwork.

On the upside, you kick your money in and every six months they buy company stock for you. On the downside, that stock dives in price every time a member of the exec team talks to the press, and all of the scheduled press meetings (announcements, earnings calls, etc) are conveniently right after the stock purchase dates. So you never come away with more than you just put in.
