This is allowed by is per manager. Some are totally fine with it as long as you're there for meetings and getting stuff done. Others require people in the office every day, no matter what. In Palo Alto it seems the average is that people are in the office 4 days and Fridays is the day to work from home. Also can be tough to be remote. So much happens in Palo Alto that you have to be diligent to stay in touch with people and there is a bit of an informal limit on how far you can climb without being located in Palo Alto. Again, really varies by team and manager.
